SailNet Advertising gripe

Greetings all Moderators...

What's with this "YouChoose.net" thingy at the bottom of every page I open that slows down my connection to blazes whilst IE reloads the latest update from this mob??

I'm on a fast-ish connection, but I pity those who are not. With all the other advertising from Google, etc. plastered over the page it is getting a bit silly.

I understand that SNet must make money somehow, but at least Google are a big enough organisation to be fast on the download.

Can anything be done to reduce the garbage?? ..or at least turn this thing off??

If you are using windows.

Goto your Windows\System32\Drivers\etc - and add to your hosts file

127.0.0.1 youchoose.net

Save (if it doesn't allow its probably because your host file is marked read only.

This will prevent it from doing recursive communication. Use tip at your own risk.

Note: it may still appear as it will be from your browser cache - but you shouldn't see all that traffic you did before.

Thanks, Jody - I don't believe it, but that actually worked!

USP, how do you know it's a legitimate petition and not just some newfangled attempt to scam your details?? Maybe I'm too much of a skeptic.. besides, contrary to what you might think, most of the world does not live in the US of A...

Yeah sorry hartley. it's a problem for us here in the US. they're trying a bunch of new legislation to get more money from us as our Government wants to take away our freedoms, charge us a fee and call it a privilege.
read the "Noah and his Ark thread".

Between Adblock, NoScript, InBoxCop and a few more esoteric goodies and Firefox tinkering, I've got things running pretty fast. I too realize Sailnet has to make money, and I have on occasion perused an ad or two for informational purposes, but I worked too long in the internet industry to just run a wide-open browser on a commercial site.

Sometimes I forget to reactivate NoScript, for instance, if I've turned it off "globally" in order to load a more-or-less trusted site. The next site I go to might be typically looking to harvest hits and IPs and sure enough, within a few hours I'm getting credit offers and penis enhancement literature, neither which I require, being a manly sailor and whatnot.

My online purchases and use of services is limited and extremely selective. So far, so good, but the litany of horror stories continues to make me wary.

Val, it is a real problem...

Ordinarily I don't object to advertisments on Sailnet or anywhere else on the WWW for that matter - but a box at the bottom of every page you open that updates itself (whether you like it or not) with the latest rants from the other side of the globe (some of them questionable and others objectionable) is just taking things too far in my most humble opinion.

USP: Sorry to hear that your Gov is being a PITA again. Hopefully it will change soon, yes? If you're cruising, I suppose you could always cruise somewhere else. You'd find us pretty friendly over here.. once you get in.

Hartley...suggest you write "administrator" with your issue. We mods have nothing to do with that stuff.
