Illinois smoking ban tamps down puffing at pipe convention

<****** language="JavaScript"> <****** language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> ST. CHARLES, Ill. — There will be no indoor smoking at a large convention for pipe smokers in Illinois.
A new Illinois law bans smoking in public places. That's taken some of the steam out of this weekend's Chicagoland International Pipe & Tobacciana Show in St. Charles.
<****** language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/coxnet/js/daytonbreadcrumbtable.js"> The event draws 4,000 pipe collectors from more than 60 countries. Organizers tried to get around the new law by arguing their gathering was a private club meeting. Police and health officials said no.
Instead, a large smoking tent has been set up 15 feet away from the Pheasant Run convention center.
Convention-goer Al Shinogle of Denver likens it to a wine tasting without the wine.

Zanshin is on a distinguished road
New smoking bans have been created and enforced in Germany as of this year. The only notable exception is this year's Oktoberfest, where smoking will still be allowed as the organizers state that they weren't given enough advance notice in order to correctly prepare special smokers areas.

I probably won't be around long enough to see that time when popular wisdom suddenly discovers that life isn't really worth living, no matter how long, if there's no enjoyment in it. (as he light's his pipe!)

You mean not everyone gives up their pleasures so they can live longer and be miserable?

(Already smoking the pipe, and the reason for going to New Bern, is to get pipe supplies.)

At the risk of insulting smoker's rights, I'm a bit confused by that comment. Do you mean to say that people who do not smoke are miserable because they don't? Or, smokers who choose to quit so they can live longer, end up being miserable?

Michelle Pfeiffer claims that the most interesting people are smokers and, try as she will, the non-smokers are boring. Given my druthers, I'm with Michelle!

But since I'm not with Michelle, I'll try a more serious response. Non-smokers are fine people. Anti-smokers are the most petty, miserable, dictatorially inclined, stick-in-the-mud type people I've ever had the displeasure to meet. They couldn't have fun in Las Vegas on your money. Hitler was an anti-smoker. The only sufferable ones are those who finally come to the conclusion that their marijuana smoking is just as much smoking as any other type. Anti-smokers are that type of old school marm who always had her nose in the air for something unpleasant smelling and wasn't happy until she found it. They're the type of people who either are vegetarians or really respect vegetarians.

They're miserable because they choose to be miserable, never realizing that we're only here for a moment anyway, and that life's little pleasures themselves are fleeting. All that I could tolerate. What I can't tolerate is their insistence that everyone around them be miserable and just as committed to a long life of misery. One can only presume that they even oppose smoking after sex but we'll have only their word on either point.

A similar law was passed here last year the "Nevada Clean Indoor act" basically states that you cannot smoke indoors due to the health of the employees...unless, however the establishment maintains gaming machines or tables. therefore the health of the employee is irrelevant!

By that premise, I can just visualize Michelle's typically "interesting" people. You know, the ones with yellow eyes, brown fingertips, stinky hair and breath, who scurry along back alleys behind restaurants and office building exit stairways to sneak a smoke, chronically hacking and spitting out phlegm onto the sidewalks while lighting up their next fag with their last butt.

Interesting people for sure. I guess I need to hang around less boring people.

In reality, I smoked both cigarettes and pot in my teens and early twenties - so not an "anti-smoker", but a non-smoker by choice and not especially miserable either. Only miserable when an interesting smoker invades my breathing space.

Maybe it's the little oxygen bottles on their little carts that make them so interesting? You know, kind of like land SCUBA divers, that's cool isn't it? Isn't that what gets most people smoking to begin with, to be cool?
