I dunno Giu. First you introduce your wife to Sailnet, then you talk of exposing your kid to GTA. Why don't you stick to happiness creation? Like sailing your boat?

"oh i forgot to mention, there are prostitutes also. pay them, they get in your Lamborghini and give full service. might want to think about that."
On that note I should probably confess that the last time I was into video games, Asteroids and Space Invaders were the rage.

I agree it does exists, but why has it grown to the levels that it has today ???, because the moral fabric of our society has declined so much in the last few decades that we now feel it's exceptable to expose our youth to violence against society, against law enforement, and raping of women though video games, and now we expose our childern to sex education in the 3rd grade.
End result, we have 8 yr old girls getting knocked up, 6 yr old boys bring knives and guns to school.
We have gone down the moral toilet and theres no returning, as parents and Grandparent we should still be able to influence our kids.
Maybe G should buy the game, play it,learn it, and use it as a teaching tool, let his boys see what become of a society without guidence or morals

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I doubt you'll get a concensus on this one. We've all raised our kids differently and I think how they turn out has a lot to do with your influence on them and what examples you set. I have no doubt if you let him use it it would be with the proper disclaimers and he'll be just fine. Do what your gut tells you to do.

Could not agree more...What is there to gain?...Nothing...Only a loss of innocence of youth...Keep him sailing and in a protected environment...His Thoughts clean and free as long as possible...That is truly a fathers job..Who cares what others are doing or talking about..
Don't think it doesnt make a difference...My kids voluntarily leave the room at sleepovers with friends if a movie they know they were not suppose to watch is put in...always one or two would follow the lead and join them..they were never made fun of but lead by example...now they are respected by their friends more so..At least the ones that matter to them anyway..
You asked..

I'm against it even having at around for "adult" entertainment. You still send the wrong signal. btw, i was just listening to the computer gal on the radio today talking about a free download you can get that will prevent your computer from playing games rated "mature", so that kind of answers the other kid bringing it over question.
My objection to these types of things, and it goes counter to the American rationalization that they'll see and hear worse, is that a child only has one childhood. If he or she grows up somewhat naive they have a whole life ahead to gain experience and wisdom. They don't need exposure to the baser elemnets of society to know that there is evil in the world as well as bad people. Why would we spend our lives working our butt's off so our kids don't have to live in crime-infested and morally compromised communities only to spend $50 to bring it into our living rooms?

That is my point exactly. It is out there. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.
The reason that it is out there is because it sells. Movies sell. TV programs sell. Novels sell. If we as a society didn't buy this stuff it wouldn't sell.
I don't pretend to understand why this is so or if it is a bad thing or a good thing. I just think it's not too realistic to pretend that if we ignore it it's going to go away and we can be immune to it's effects on society.
I don't pretend to know the exact age that one should start preparing one's child for the realities of life. But I'm pretty sure that it should happen before they find out for themselves.

Hard to argue with that. I just wonder if in this world of instant gratification and instant communication such a place as a protected environment exists anymore.

Alex,
Slim Jims are illegal in a few States but I could probably get you one if you'd like. A lot of kid's in Southwest Dallas receive them for their thirteenth birthday. It's a sort of . . . right of passage into adulthood.
Let me know . . .

Well, look at who some of the role models for young people are today....
Examples:
Britney Spears, a confused woman who can't even remember to put on her underwear before leaving her house for the day.
Michael Vick, an idiot who gave up a promising professional sports career because he loved torturing and killing dogs too much.
Paris Hilton, another very confused and spoiled young woman with a lot of issues and a lot of pornographic home videos floating around.
various rap stars with their associated criminal records and antisocial behavior.
America has set the moral standards bar pretty damn low.
BTW, for those of you who don't know what a slim jim is, he's not talking about the dried jerky that you can buy in most convenience stores, but a slim piece of metal with a notch in the end that is designed to unlock car doors without a key. Usually about 3/4-1" wide and two feet long... and mere possession of one is often considered a crime.
Looks like this:
