Grand Theft Auto
The gane finally arrives in Portugal, after large controversy about the violent and aggressive contents.
They have a show on TV debating if it should be allowed...for now only 20.000 games were allowed in, but the future is uncertain..
Sold only to older than 18 years old, it is not recommended for young people.
We are natrually a quiet calm peacefull people, so we don't know if this game is going to be a problem...
Me?? I'd like to have it and probably show my kid how I play...he needs to know about these things...
Quation is...if I ever buy that game for me, should I allow him to see or play (with me, off course)..please, remember I am not from the US, so guns and violence are seen here as a taboo thing...and not too comom...the sex scenes we're OK with them
Just curious

There is no better way to learn about the ills and unpleasantness that the world is full of that with the guidance of a father who cares as much as you obviously do.
He will probably be discussing the game with his playmates soon enough. Give him the chance to be armed with a little bit of your wisdom beforehand.

Why Alex ?? why expose your boys to such sh*t, graphicaly violent games are fun to play when it's war games,or human against the monster, but gang violence against people, cops, and sex sence, WTF are these low lifes thinking, besides making a buck and glorifing the decaying society here in the US
But that's my opinion

I wouldn't do it Alex, Fred is too nice a kid. I see no benefit in exposing him to that type of "entertainment". He'll learn what the real world is like soon enough.

Gui-
Why expose your kid's mind to trash like that. Portugal probably doesn't have the cultural ills that we do here, or at least not to the same degree, and I see no reason to expose a smart and good kid, like Fred, to it.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I don't disagree. The problem is that stuff like that already exists and Fred is going to find out about it. He's going to be talking about it. And he may end up playing it. Heck, Alex said he wants to buy it for himself.

Fred is not three years old. I am just guessing but I would say that he is at least 10 or 11. Maybe I am just weird but I remember the things that I was thinking about at that age. I could have used a little realistic, caring input to help me deal with all the revelations.
I probably shouldn't even be commenting on this subject in that I am not a father.
But I remember well what it was like to be a son.
In my opinion, it would be better to be a part of a learning experience like this with a child than it would be to pretend that it's not going to happen and let them go through it alone.

It's a pretty violent game. mugging people, carjacking them, killing police. not recommended for a kid. i play it. i loved Vice City, still play it on occassion and finished the first 10 levels of San Andreas then got bored. i like Vice City as you can hijack a catamaran or a 40' sloop with massive firepower
but as i say again not for kids. it has blood! alot of blood and violence.

I don't want or need the game, but my issue is exactly what Knothead is talking about...
It is widely spoken here, so my issue is, I am sure that thru some friend he will see the game...
I can either forbid him to play or see the game (which is hard to control when he is away from me, altough he is pretty obedient)
or
I show him the game and teach him that it is not ral life and such...
I don't want the game for me, I am not a violent person, just fast...but not violent...
I am just preparing for when he comes home with ideas to play or saying he palyed at a freinds house.
Since this game is in the US for many years now, I and my wife were discussing what to do in the event of Fred getting curious..just probing your experiences...
And the US is not that bad..it's so big and different....you get a lot of good, and some bad..more good than bad...
I doubt he will see America as Grand Theft Auto, he has been there many times, mostly NY and Portsmouth NH, and likes the US..
Just asking your opinions..please keep them coming...I like to discuss these things...
