whatever happened to Sailormitch?
a few of you know this but i had an ischemic stroke on april 13. spent the last 5 weeks either in a regular hospital or in a rehab hospital for intensive physical therapy. left arm and leg have a ways to go but progress so far has been good. expectation is for100 percent recovery over the coming months. i just came home yesterday.its great to be here. looks like the 2008 sailing season is a goner for me, however. but my goal is to get back on the boat of course. i know several of you on here have beeen down this same road. so any words of advise are appreciated. keeping up with sailnet fell off the priority list but will check in some now that i am home. the stroke did not afffect my speeech or cognitive part of my brain.so when i have the time and energy i will keep the bush/mccain kool aide swillers in line.
fair winds to all.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

The best piece of advice I can offer is to do your therapy, do all your therapy and push the limits as hard and fast as you can, not even when it hurts - especially when it hurts (both mentally and physically). Hurting is better than disabled and far better than dead.
My first stroke was October 2004; it affected speech (word finding and actually sounding out the words) and cognitive abilities (measured IQ drop of 30 points in some areas, left side neglect and lack of emotional control) far more than left hand/leg although there was some impairment there as well (drooping smile, immobile tongue, weakness and dexterity issues).
The doctor at the hospital released me to go back to work the day after the stroke. I was provided no med's other than my normal daily heart related stuff and a aspirin.
Instead I went to 6 months of intensive therapy - hell I couldn't even legally drive for three months. I pushed hard and pushed back at therapist to make it harder (especially the silly cognitive exercises which were designed at the third grade level).
I'm still not all better, have limited emotional control and do not believe I've recovered all my cognitive abilities. Physically, I can tell the difference looking in a mirror (my left cheek looks hollow), I don't think others can. I'll never play the piano, but didn't play before. Typing is somewhat slower and my right hand covers more of the keyboard than normal folks do. I speak simpler now, although my writing is pretty much the same it takes me longer to word my sentences. I pause a lot when speaking and shy away from emotional things (i tend to tear up/choke up and cry at inopportune moments). I don't write code as well as I used to, but still better than most of my peers.
My neurologist - psychologists said no one recovers 100%, but you can learn to fake it. I'm a good actor and had world class care at John Hopkins.
I turned down the offer of long term disability and went back to work because the best test of cognitive ability was working in my field. I struggled, but had a good boss that understood and it worked.
The point is you learn and adapt.
My second stroke (October 2007) I felt it coming, knew when it was real and went to the hospital (same one, but it now has a stroke certification). I got real care this time as a educated consumer. They had my records up, had me diagnosed and a IV with thinner going in about a hour. The MRI showed the clot, and how the IV had saved it from becoming a killer.
Time and education saves EVERYTHING when it comes to a stroke. There are no visible signs at all I had this one, and I did go back to work after 1 day of recovering at home.
I'm dreading October 2010, seems I have these things every three years.
Take care, PM if you have questions. Work hard and recover well.
Chuck

I'd have to agree with Chuckles regarding pushing and the need for therapy. My experience with it is for a TBI, not a stroke, but basically same difference. According to my neurologist from over 25 years ago, I shouldn't be able to walk...but I do a fair imitation most days. Learned to ski while on crutches learning how to walk again, much to the dismay of my physical therapist.
