Fuel Prices!

I'm in Jacksonville, FL, and the price of marine diesel downtown is (yikes!) $5.50 a gallon this weekend.

The world is going to be ruled by trawlers and sailboats. My old buds with their Hatteras, Bertram, etc., sport fishing boats are crying the blues. Who wants to go somewhere when your boat sucks down 120 gallons an hour? It won't be long and those fishing boat captains are gonna be amongst the unemployed.

I'm also noticing that even though it's the Fourth of July, a beautiful day, warm, not much wind, etc., that the river is nearly empty of boats. Big (local term--not really big boats) boats are chugging past at an idle. Only a couple of kids out there tubing.

Anyway, what are you paying for diesel/gas in your area?

4.99 highway
5.35 at the dock...

The real stinker about this is Washington state is so greedy ( Ill let you guess which party ) they dont give boaters any break on the federal highway tax... just relabel it and charge it anyway..

Right now I'm working in Guam and the good stuff (premium gas) goes for $4.68 a gallon.

I have to say, wind power rules!!!

I'm still paying less than $4.00 at the pump, and since I have a relatively little boat, can fuel my boat from there using a six-gallon jerry can or two.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

The only time our boat's been filled at the gas dock, so far, was just prior to her trip north, when we brought her home after buying her. Thankfully that was last summer! Other than that: I have a 2-1/2 gallon gas can I occasionally throw in the car and fill on the way to the boat.

Now, when we get cruising, that'll be another story. Both ways, north and south, into and out of Lake St. Clair, to either of the Great Lakes at either end of her, involve lengthly trips under motor. It's 6-8 hours on one, 10-14 hours on the other - depending on direction, hull speed, wind, etc. They can be sailed, if the wind's right and you know what you're about, or so I'm told, but it's rarely done, even by experienced captains.
