Fishing questions

I've never really been a fishing type person, maybe a dozen times in my life, so I'm probably going to ask some really dumb questions

Over the 4th my granddaughter was down and we spent hours and hours fishing off the boat & dock and didn't catch a damn thing, but she had a blast and I got a kick out of her fishing.

We started out with the usual bait ( ie: Salami, string Chesse, Strawberries, gummy bears, etc,etc ) then went for real dead bait ( sardines ) then went to the fake stuff ( softbait w/ 1/8oz jighead )

Today I found some stuff by Berkley called Glup and before Skylur comes down again this weekend I wanted to try one out.

So, the question is, has anyone ever try this bait and if so, how did you rig up the line, do you use a jighead or some other setup.

Oh, we have some kind of bass in the marina and we will C&R them

There are likely to be very small fish there, which is fine. Make sure you use tiny hooks and preferably a very thin rod, with I suggest a hard to get off bait like tiny bits of squid. I took my 3 yr old GD to see some old guys doing this for the cat and catching something every minute or two, just after the aquarium to see Nemo. The rig is ledger, ie 3-4 hooks about 18" apart above the sinker. Don't worry about fancy knots a double surgeon's or double granny knot is ok. "Hours n hours" is remarkable. She sounds like a keeper, but some results help. Getting a feed comes later. Enjoy your time with her.

Poo...

Maybe off the harbour wall may be better. If there are wee fish there they normally co-operate. Fish with very light tackle for the wee fish.

My first fish, 1972, was a wee one of these...

Caught here in fresh water...

Even though it's a freshwater rig, this rig shown here should work for you...

ruddhfishing

Remember to fish quite light. The biggest mistakes are battleship floats, two-ton lead weights and a fishhead for bait. It needs a shark to take it.

A kid never forgets catching a first fish, and will talk about it for months, and will be hooked for life.

PDP,

My son uses the "Gulp" baits with success. He fishes from our dock often and catches croaker, cats, white perch and the occasional striper. I believe he uses a bottom rig; weight at bottom, wire, two attachment swivels, two hooks.

He also uses a light weight spinning outfit or fly rod to catch small fish, whereas he changes to a heavier rod, dorsal hooks the small fish and allows it to free swim. Almost always, this technique produces a much larger fish. We occasionally troll from the boat using umbrella rigs.

I prefer fly rods; dolphin aka mahi - mahi on a fly

Good Luck!!

Thanks guys, I'll post any results.

I really should get into this more, I think I must be the only one on the dock that doesn't fish

Returned alive too, which is very good indeed to see.

That fish reminds me of a video I saw of a bunch of birdwatchers looking at a rare waterbird, somewhere in England. As they're all watching and oohing and ahhing over the rare birdie... a pike comes along and eats it.

I love Mother Nature's timing sometimes.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Bigger still is Esox Muskellunge, known as the "Musky", from the old Red Indian word "masquinogy"... "great pike".

We don't have them in Europe.

North Americans are blessed with far more species than us here.... walleye, large mouth bass, small mouth bass, bluegill, cropeye, pumpkin seed, yellow perch.... all edible, and all absent from Scotland.

Value them guys.

I have been to Wisconsin and the fishing is really something, and not expensive.

You are blessed.

You could also try a sabiki rig which is a series of small hooks pre-rigged with feathers etc. Some actual bait still helps, as does some bread on the water. A child may progress to bigger targets but most get bored if the action is too slow and the younger ones still get a kick out of catching anything especially if there is a cat.
