Hog,

I had been wondering where Cam was. He LOVES his GPS, I tell ya. Lucky it did not cost him his life this time. I have even heard, on condition of anonymity, that Cam uses it to find his way to the bathroom. Don't tell anyone I said this though. It would embarass him because his wife has been wondering where the stains in the livingroom carpet were coming from.

The follow up story was that they phoned in their position on cell phone so rescuers could find them. The recuers however refused to rely on GPS and instead used their sextants and ended up amidst the Hawg's latest coils! They thought they were among the monuments in Joshua Tree National Park!

Way to go Hawg...and bite me with BarBQ-sauce CD!!

Cam,
They thought they were in the petrified forrest... only it smelled like the Beneteau factory west of Mytle Beach.

I don't mean to be a complaint monger, but I just crapped on my living room floor. Thanks, Mr. Garmin!

I see the problem here. They didn't have their VHF/DSC linked to the GPS. Nor did they have Radar overlay.....Rookies. Someone get these people a Spot, a tracking website, pre-journey blog, two PLBs, an industril sized bag of beef jerkey, a sawed off shot gun with serial numbers filed off and no paperwork (desert pirate defence), a box of rubbers, thirty bottles of rum, Sat phone, an ice pick, a snorkel, an avacado, three rolls of aluminum foil, 17 tubes of toothpaste.......

PS, In their defence (?) they are from California. That puts them pretty high in standing for most likely to follow GPS off of a cliff.

If they used the sextant they would not have gotten lost.

And they didn't need a dead reckoning plot because they knew exactly where they were at all times. Heck, they knew exactly where they were even when they were most lost. If they'd had a back-up GPS they could have confirmed exactly where they were. (g)

Gary1 is on a distinguished road
I saw a good description of a GPS once:

An expensive device that will tell you exactly where you have gone aground so you can tell your rescuers.

Didn't know it'd work for idiots lost in the desert, too.

Note to self: don't let the map-reading skills get rusty...
