Charlie though, became quite the hurricane when "he" came ashore at Port Charlotte. I think that storm caught alot of people flatfooted when it made a hard right and came ashore. CD, were you on das boat or ashore?
Sometimes its hard to make the right decisions, i.e., evacuate, hunker down and stay, etc. etc. because hurricanes can be so unpredictable.
For instance, I have friends who live on a boat in Marathon and when Hurricane Wilma was bearing down on the Keys, they did the smart thing, they evacuated. They secured their boat in a hurricane hole and checked into a hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. Of course, Wilma slammed Lauderdale pretty hard. At the height of the storm, my friends were evacuated out of the hotel because a construction crane collapsed on the building. David said that while he was trying to get to his car a portable construction "john" streaked overhead, about fifty foot off the ground and traveling so fast it was a blur. He said the experience was terrifying. When they finally returned to the Keys, they found their boat untouched, safe and sound, just as they had left it.
Another example; my brothers girlfriend lives in Key Largo and she evacuated the Keys because of Hurricane Andrew. All of the computer models predicted the storm's path to make landfall around Key Largo, so she drove to her Mother's home in Homestead. Unfortunately, Homestead, as it turned out, was ground zero. She and her Mom spent nine hours trapped, holding each other, scared to death under the remnants of the house. Luckily they were not hurt, but the storm literally flatten Homestead.
You just never know, Mother Nature can do the unexpected so often.
