A Phone Conversation with CharlieCobra
My cell phone rang and I excused myself form a buisness meeting...
"Hey this is Charlie".......................Hey.. I said...How's it going?... Charlie.....who????
CharlieCobra from sail net...said he.....
OOHHH! Charlie.... hows it going... Hey can I call you in about a 1/2 hour Im signing a contract right now....you bet said he.
Reconnected, I find on the other end of the line the same persona we experance here on line...a shoot from the hip..John Wayne..no nonsense.. bigger then life... mater of fact swagger of a man unabashed to tell you how it is kind of guy..
I like that...I like that allot as a matter of fact...
He was just calling to tell me my offer to help him out wouldn't be needed because things had changed and he'd be heading north to a different yard for haul out instead of south and could probably manage on his own under sail alone...
Some small talk....if you can call Charlie small...some exchanges about work and careers..talk of boats, and an invite to sail someday with me this winter and were off the phone.
It wasent to long ago ,I use to think people who talked and or conversed online were nerds and weirdos, and heaven help thoes who actually wanted to meet one another....Just how did I and people like Charlie get sucked into this gig called Sailnet anyway...beats me...but I know one thing for sure.
I cant wait to meet him.
So... heres your chance to share what camaraderie Sailnet has brought your way...What friendships have formed and fun had.

I met up with djodenda last weekend at Hope Island and we shared some good laughs. I've been trying to catch jrd22 up at Blakely Island. I thought I had him cornered one time, as the hatch was open on his boat, but it was probably left that way from "Trespassers". I keep thinking when I'm out on the work boat in 25 - 35 knot winds outside Deception, I'll see Charlie out there breakin' sh*t. Not yet, but I'm sure that day is still coming. I'd like to meet Faster across the border, as it sounds like we have a lot in common, except he's older than dirt. And then there's StillRaining. His boat ended up six feet away from my boat and we haven't met yet. That to me, is funny. I know when we do finally meet, we'll both have big grins on. Lotsa good people here.

sailortjk seem like a nice guy for a White Sox fan.
I haven't had the pleasure of meeting anyone from SailNet in person yet. I look forward to the opportunity.
I usually find a way to ask my customers if they happen to visit the site and if so what their usernames are but so far haven't met any regulars.
I'm thinking that may be a good thing considering some of the things I've posted here.

Any one who is a Sox's fan is okay in my book...oh wait, you said White Sox??? Do they even exist anymore???
I've met a few people from Sailnet...and spoken to several more...and so far, I'm glad I took the time to do so. Max-on and his better half are good eggs, as is the missing-in-action portagee, Gui. I've sat on ChucklesR catamaran and in his livingroom with MMR. I've spoken to Bubb2, Denby and a few more...
As for Knothead... If his customers knew what a Rays fan he was, they'd run screaming.
Erps— We need some photos of Still's boat cabin for the forum to discuss. Can you help us out.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I'd like to meet you, too, young feller!! But my nursing home nazi won't let me out! ..and in any case I don't think they'd let your oxygen cart across the border!
Seriously, I know Charlie talked about a PNW meet, but these things are tough to coordinate, and even though we're all in the same general area, the sailing time to a central point and back can be a few days each way.
BTW I flew the Sailnet.com burgee all summer up here and the only comment or notice I got was "Whazzat?"

I was just thinking about this. In a differnent thread (Who is Cruising Dad?) a new commer to the club did not understand my sense of humor or attempt at humor. I sent him a PM trying to explain that it was all in good fun, that in fact Brian and I are good friends.
Lets see.....Alex/Giulietta, Guy/Sailaway21, Jim/T34C, we all have sailed together and communicate (E-mail/ cell Phone) on a regular basis. I have even been know to cook brats for the crazy bastards, and by the why, Alex is not a bastard. He is a son of the king but not the queen.
Brian/Cruisingdad, I have had the pleasure of meeting in person. Our families got together as everybody knows at the local I-Hop. Hey it was a great time. If we lived closer than a 16 hour drive, I can say I am sure we would be getting together more often. When I get bored I call Brian to say hello and to tell him that nobody from Catalina knows the man. He will uaually listen for about 5 seconds than say, "Who is this again? Do I know you?" Seriously, we talk quite often. He has a lovely wife and his father taught him all he knows about sailing.
I have never had the opportunity to meet Cam/George, but I would like to. He is always helpful and ready to listen. If ever anyone has a question about battery power and stereos, George is your guy. I hear that he just bought a new set of Bose speakers that he can't wait to try.
Sailhog, what can you say about the Hog? Fun guy to be around and he has two of perhaps the most charming daughters you will ever meet. Our meeting was brief, but very enjoyable. We too communicate on a regular basis when he is not chasing the tourist away. I believe he currently is building an ark.
I am sure I am missing some people, Oh ya, Fireman Bob/Bestfriend. This crazy ass came all the way from San Francisco to Chicago to go to the Strictly Sail Show. Hey Bob, don't they have boat shows in your state. Just kidding, I am glad you came.
Like I said, I am forgetting others.
Anyway, I feel that this community has brought me a lot of close relationships. The people here are great. I have made friends all over the country from sailnet. From San Francisco, Dallas, and Hilton Head, I now have sailing friends all over North America and there are many others I hope to meet in the future.
Its kinda crazy how this place works.

I missed the Chesapeake raft up, but I've met or spoken to
Alex/Giu (and family), SD, Valiente's wife, Xort and Admiral Xort, CraigToo, zzgta and Eryka and husband Dan.
All of them good folks who'd I'd sail with any day.
You other guys are all nuts tho.
