Joel said, "divisive political crap". Well, what else do you think politics is or ever has been? It's supposed to be divisive-that's how we compare and contrast the solutions contemplated. As to crap, well there's a lot of it to be dealt with (not even counting the continued sales of Catalinas!).

Wow. I guess everyone in the Gulf region is without a brain. I had no idea.
Seriously... i get survival of the fittest but come on.

Perhaps I need to say it again. If you live below sea level, and aren't smart enough to leave town when a cat 4 hurricane is headed your way, you deserve what you get.
I'm not saying that everyone who stayed in NO during Katrina was incapable of coming though unscathed, but it would appear that the vast majority were unprepared. Since they were unprepared, and not smart enough to get their unprepared rearends out of there, they deserve what they got.
I'm not saying that they should not have gotten help from federal and state agencies. I am saying that they shouldn't complain if the help doesn't meet their expectations.

What wonderful humanitarians and fellow Americans some of you are.
Tell you what... kick Louisiana out of the Union. We'll keep the LOOP, the refineries, the offshore platforms... of course, since we're not your problem anymore we'll have to extend our nautical economic zone and suck up anything within 200 miles. President Jindal decides what revenue is necessary to maintain levees and what-not, and sets royalties on the flow of oil and natural gas through Louisiana. We won't waste any more of your money.
Oh, and of course we'll keep one of the busiest ports in the world, control of the Mississippi River, and Avery 'Tabasco' Island.
Deal?

So are you saying that all (or the vast majority) of the people who stayed in NO during Katrina were incapable of leaving and therefore were entitled to swift and comprehensive assistance from the federal government?
I'm not saying that FEMA didn't make a cluster of it. They most certainly did. I am saying that the vast majority of the people who needed rescueing shouldn't have been there when the storm hit.

The thing I find particularly distasteful about this whole debate, is that for all the mistakes that where made, by the Mayor, the Governor and the President, the blame is attached to the one who had the least control over what happened.
Instead of the story being, how can we correct what went wrong. How can we be better prepared the next time. We have nothing but a big "GOTCHA".
Instead of looking for solutions, we look at who to blame. At a time when politics should not even be a part of things, we get political posturing.
There's a very good reason idiots like Michael Moore looked forward to Gustav, and quite simply, it's because they thought they could score political points.
The simple fact that this thread even exists, says what it's really all about. And it ain't got nothing to do with being humanitarian.

OK, sailaway, I'll call you a naif and you can appear in those Calvin Klein commercials next to Kate Moss. (Comes with the title.[g])
LA=NO=Mississippi River=Army Corps of Engineers=flood control=flooding from a major federal national waterway=federal matter.
Can't let LA or NO control the river, they'd make it by tolls.
Tidbit for sailors: One of the old treaties gives Brits the perpetual right to enter & sail up that river without having to stop first for a formal Customs entry, the way everyone else does.
See? Federal Matter.
As to po fohk being sold swampland...well, after all, the Party Machine down there is one of the two largest federal political machines in the nation. Surely that makes it vital to the rest of the machine? (sigh)
I heard a good story from one of LBJs younger cronies. LBJ coming from another wonderful state where both parties play the same game. They were walking through a cemetery reading the names off tombstones and counting their votes. Come to one old tombstone and the new guy says "I can't read it, skip it." And the older one says "Hell no, you go clean that stone off and read the name. He's got the same right to vote for LBJ that everyone else does!"
Yes, that's party politics, not limited by place or party. Done in NY and Boston, too. Tip O'Neill wrote a wonderfully entertaining (or traumatizing) book about it titled "Speaker of the House". Which was his job for so many years.
