Yet another reason NOT to be like Europe

For all of you who seem to think that we should adopt a more "European" style ..... EU wants to ban 'sexist' TV commercials - Telegraph

It would be a pity if European commercials got bland. Some of them are real hoots.

YouTube - Why I Like The Ballet
YouTube - Foreign Gillette Commercial
YouTube - Danier Leather Commercial

These are just a few of my favorites.

If they can't use sex/or sex appeal how will they sell those otherwise boring, low quality products?
Anyone ever do a linguistic root search on 'volvo'? No pretty blonds to sell them and the whole car market suffers.

Gary:

Danier Leather is a Canadian company.
Danier - Leave ordinary behind - leather and suede manufacturing and design.

Now this is a cheeky Porsche commercial - not much chance of this running on the west side of the Atlantic.

The article reflects the same old tired claptrap of feminism from, say, twenty years ago. Of those who still describe themselves as feminists, at least on this side of the pond, many now have realized the impossibility of equalizing the sexes and advocate a path of rejoicing in the differences. There was that minor little problem of the fact that most women do not want to look, act, or be treated like men. Sometimes things are stereotypical for a pretty good reason.

Sorry, John, but that works for me. Must be 20-30 years since I first said I don't want to see anything in a catalogue that doesn't have a model number and a price attached to it.

Take the hot bods OUT, or put their prices IN. Either way works fine for me, let's just be up front about what we're selling, and stop the tease.

although I do basically agree with what you say, I'm curios to know some of the other reasons that inspired you to make this statement. Or does you liking/disliking a place solely depend on the amount of sex you get to see on TV?

I don't watch TV

Plus, I wasn't saying I didn't like Europe, just didn't want to be like Europe. Comes from being an Edmund Burke and Adam Smith fan.

Yurrup is great! That is to say, it's great in Europe. The problem that some get into on this side of the pond is when they start thinking that because Europe is doing something, we should follow. There's a long history of this. For instance you guys decided to have a little war in 1914 and we ended up getting invited to help with it. Twenty five years later you did the same thing. Most recently, Europe had trouble finding Yugoslavia on the map and had apparently forgotten that it was part of Europe. Let's face it, you guys spent most of the last century trying to figure out where your borders were supposed to be. And we had to get involved each time what with bailing your asses out on the battlefield and afterwards. Now I'm not the sharpest pencil in the drawer but I see a pattern here. And you'll please forgive me if I don't just erupt with excitement over whatever you guys have dreamed up now. I can get along without TV commercials where the armpit hair is a co-gender issue.
