It's not a bad old dump for a big city. I've lived here pretty much all my life and it's getting all a bit much for me, time to move somewhere smaller and quieter.
Sydney is defined by the harbour. All else is secondary. Architectually it is a hodge podge where the mighty buckazoid rules unfettered with levels of corruption about what you would expect.
If you check out the Beer Club thread you can get an idea of how good the place is for wining and dining and it is very good indeed.
Sydney does have what many of us think is an ideal climate. Most of the year it is warm to hot but we do get a short blast of winter which is nice for a change but never so cold that you can't go sailing and you will find people out surfing on our very fine beaches most of the year. Australian women also have something of a love affair with butt floss bikinis and topless sunbathing. Make of that what you will.
Having said that Melbourne is a far more civilised place than Sydney albeit with a tendency to disappearing up it's own arsehole and if given the choice I'd rather live in Hobart than either.
ps - RB, Hartley does come from Melbourne, he was only visiting Sydney and then sailing back home on that ship. (pics were posted on another thread but this is the ship leaving Sydney enroute to Melbourne. Ms W took them from our place.) We are a kind and generous people and allow Melbournians temporary access.
