I was in the market both for selling and for buying a replacement. The price that I had to ask in order to remain competitive with the other similar boats had just reached the point where I had planned on de-listing the boat and upgrading it to what I wanted when, on the same day, I got a lowball offer (which I would not normally have accepted) and a deal on a newer and larger boat of the type and outfitting that I wanted at a very good price. I chose to do the swap (much to the pleasure of my brokers, who got 2 commissions shortly before Xmas) because of the serendipitous course of events and as I write this I am still cleaning up and inventorying this new boat.

I think that for those wanting to get out of boats it is a terrible time, but for those downgrading or upgrading it isn't as bad as it is made out to be. I am sure that the average listing price on Yachtworld.com and other sites is no longer commensurate with the actual sales prices.

Zanshin,

That was an interesting perspective--and probably accurate.

I have a new Jeanneau, only 300 hours on the engine. Oh, and during the survey of the old boat the surveyor found a completed corroded open braided copper cable which he said we should replace and we assumed it connected the grounding on the engine with the generator. After tracing the cable I found it went to the rudder; the two are now connected through a new cable and the lack of grounding of the rudder coupled with being in a very electrically active marina for 2 years probably exacerbated the crevice corrosion issues on the old rudder.

Prices'll come down across the board, with a big drop as next winter comes on, and not bottom until three or four years from now, that's my guess.

There was an oil shock before, and it took from 1973 till 1983 for things to recover. What we've just had has been an oil shock (natural limits on supply this time, maybe, rather than man-made), and a burst financial bubble worse than anything from the 70's.

One of the recurring themes in the literature about the 1929 crash and the slide into the depression, is how slowly it seemed to happen. I'm hoping we don't face times as bad as that, but as many here are saying, it has a long way to go yet, and my guess is, it'll be worse than the 70's. And in another thread someone was saying avocado green is making a comeback...

I have watched one boat on Yachtworld go from 350 to 319 (asking) this month. I don't have 300 but I want the boat.................
Some others in the 120-175 range have come down some too.................
This is two specific boat types.

Jock-san means a color used in decades past - avocado green was one of those colors they used to paint kitchen appliances, use for bathroom tile, etc, home decor ...

You couldn't sell apppliances and such without it in the early 70's. But then as soon as it fell out of fashion...you were stuck with them. The color never came back in fashion, the appliances persist along with huge flowered wallpaper from the same era, that no one really wants any more.
