Post I need a Sailnet sabatical

That's it...I need a break from this so called sailing site. But before I go I just need to vent. The political rhetoric and overload on this site is obnoxious, distracting and it just plan sucks! I wish I could learn how to better ignore these threads, but the fact is they do interest me. My reflex is to read them...but then I hate the fact that I did. I know, I know, stupid idiot I am, I could just not look at them...can you?

I discovered Sailnet by way of a search on Google, because I was looking to discuss sailing, learn more about it, and meet people who shared one of my passions. That has happened many times, just recently at our rendezvous at the boat show and earlier in the spring at MYC.

Of late however, this site and its members have failed to deliver. I get the occasional discussion in the "off topic" forum, I have been drawn to them once and a while myself. Sailnet was a sanctuary for me to get away from all that everyday CRAP.

So there you have...maybe I'll get bored enough over the winter to check in, but if not, have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year.

Until we meet again...

SailorMitch, I hope to see you at the marina soon, all the best.

Chef, I will be sorry to see you go, but if it best for you. I think it is a little about the election and a little about winter coming (withdraw) that has everyone on edge. My best to you and keep your Iron dry!

chef- I have to agree in many respects. I love politics. I love to talk about it, argue about it, etc... I don't like to mix politics and sailing. I tend really do skip most of the political crap that goes on here. I just don't like it, so I don't read it. Occationaly I will check in on a political thread. I usually get irritated and leave and realize why I skip them most of the time.

Don't worry, the site will still be here when you come back. Other will have left too, some will still be around, but it will still be here.

wcsailor is on a distinguished road
I think we all are tired of the political news and debate. What I find interesting about reading the comments on this forum is that it is a microcosm of society at large. While sometimes it's hard to wrap my mind around political stage at the national level, it's easier to grasp and comprehend it when we, who share so much common ground, discuss our differences. I think after a few days things will simmer down, the holiday season will get into full swing and we'll be waiting for the game to really start.

We didn't vote for "O" but we do hope he does a good job and serves to the middle. Who knows, maybe he'll surprise us!

Chef, i've been down there a couple of times lately but haven't seen any activity on your boat. I'm leaving mine in the water this winter and had the marina winterize the engine this week. I never de-winterized anything else, so she's set for cold weather. I'll be down to check on her fairly often and will look for you.

You're actually inspiring me to take a sabbatical from this site as well. I haven't responded to nearly as much of the tripe as i have wanted to, but it's an absolute waste of my energy to do so. i'm focusing hard on getting well and need my energy for thr rehab. I want to have a full sailing season in 2009!!!!

Mitch

T37:

Glad to have you back when you are ready.

I have studiously avoided the off-topic stuff, unless the title is something like yours. I started avoiding off-topic stuff early on and am glad that I did.

I missed much of Courtney's story that way, but have been able to keep focused on the sailing stuff, and useless chit-chat and ribbing with my "cyber-buddies"

Again.... it's pretty easy to stay away from the argument threads as long as you don't let yourself get drawn into them initially.

Nothing against those who like to participate in them, it's just not for me.

Best wishes, and hope to see you back soon.

David

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I realize there is a lot of unnecessary stuff that goes on around here, stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with sailing. But at the same time, when a sailing question gets asked, it is answered.
It is answered quickly by sailors with a lot of experience.
We joke around, talk nonsense and politics a lot, but when the chips are down, this panel delivers the goods.
