PJ O'Rourke on how "We Blew It"
Posted elsewhere but here as well for PJ's fans who might not have seen it.
On the election, Republicans acting like Democrats, Democrats acting like, well, Democrats, and what to do about it all.

I have to admit, when I read it the other day, at first I thought he was being too harsh. After I thought it about though, his points are quite valid.

If you want an independents point of view (that actually voted for McCain), Republicans blew it because of George Bush. Right or wrong, (and as you know I do not blame him for everything that has happened), he became the poster boy for everything that went wrong with our country. Everyone distanced themselves from him and still do. Did I read somewhere that he is now, officially, the most unpopular sitting president ever?
People were so hungry for such a massive difference, they chose anyone not associated with Bush... ie Republicans.
I have no facts to back this up Sway, it is simply my opinion.

CD - Bush was just the final straw.

"Final straw," John? TTBOMK, there was no wide-spread dissatisfaction with the GOP amongst "conservatives" and independents prior to G.W. Bush. There is now, tho.
CD, on the "most unpopular President ever": Hard to say. He's got lots of competition.

Jim - I was disappointed that Reagan didn't accomplish more. and with the election of Bush I, my disillusionment began. It was briefly brightened in '94, but soon dimmed again as the GOP retreated from the Contract with America. So for me, Bush is the final straw.

Quite a spanking from PJ. He's right...and Bush was a nice sized piece of it ...but the PROCESS started before him and I reserve my particular wrath for the repubs in Congress in his first term that acted like dems and continued to do so after the 2006 loss. I blame the Dems too...but at least they were true to their own beliefs however wrong they are!

So liberals are all pot smoking hippies who think of people as nuisances? Even when trying to accept responsibility he can't open his mind or stop slinging mud. Pathetic.

Nah, he just grew up and graduated from college!
The pot-smoking hippies part is the humourous portion of his statement. That the liberal movement regards the wishes of the individual as not germane to the their greater goals is tough to argue. The troubling fact with most of those goals is that the "problem" is too many people thinking and doing as they like without reference to the greater good as seen by liberals. Taken to their logical conclusions, their goals result in fewer people on the planet with less autonomy in their own lives. PJ may be pathetic but the alternative presented by the liberal establishment is arrogance, likely ending in fascism. And I use that word advisedly.
