"Decades ago?" You have a real short memory, sck5. Perhaps you don't recall a little thing popularly referred-to as the "Brady Bill?" That was a mere 15 years ago. (It's sunset clause just kicked-in five years ago.) That happened the last time "liberal" Democrats had a majority in the Senate and a "liberal" Democrat President. Now anti-gun proponents are pushing for Brady II. Brady II mandates anybody that wishes to purchase a handgun first obtain a state handgun license and that all handgun purchases be registered. Look at the history in the U.K.: The licensing restriction was eventually used to deny law-abiding citizens the ability to purchase and the registration database was eventually used to confiscate.

It's not paranoia when somebody's really out to get you. "Liberal" Democrats didn't dump gun control because they had a sudden attack of conscience or intelligence, they dumped gun control because it was losing them elections in marginal races. As soon as they think they have a mandate again, believe me: Gun control will be back on their agenda. You refer to those who expect this as "paranoid." (Reflective of a typical left-"liberal" superiority attitude, I might note.) I argue that anybody who claims to believe otherwise is either delusional or is engaging in disingenuous behaviour.

Just because they aren't pitching it doesn't mean they don't still want it. Do you really believe, for a moment, that the likes of Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and Charles Schumer have given up on the idea of disarming Americans? Dream on.
You see Rockter, from over in Scotland, hollering "Don't let them do it!"? He knows. He's in a place we'll be if we don't keep our guard up.
The anti-gun, anti-self-defense fanatics haven't given up. They're just laying back and waiting for a more favourable climate. Part of that would be a Congress and President more inclined to their point-of-view.
They have that now.

Unlike the nebulous, made-up term "assault weapon," which means whatever the anti-gun crowd or dominant media wants it to mean at the moment, "assault rifle" is a military term that has a fairly well-defined meaning. The term is believed to be derived fromthe German word "sturmgewehr," which means "storm rifle." It is the concept, first pioneered by the Germans during WWII, that a light, high-capacity rifle firing smaller-caliber rounds at a high rate-of-fire was more effective in battle than bigger, slower, longer-range rifles. In modern firearms parlance, "assault rifle" generally refers to a light, short-barreled, selective-fire rifle, firing a relatively light, small-caliber round. Assault rifles have selectors that give them the ability to operate in two-or-more of: Semi-automatic (one trigger pull, one round), burst (one trigger pull, several rounds [three is common]) and fully automatic (one trigger pull, keeps going until empty). Note that the dominant media is frequently confused and/or misleading. They will often refer to "automatic" weapons during a news story. Rarely are true automatic weapons used in a crime here in the U.S. Contrary to popular belief, often promulgated by anti-gun, anti-self-defence fanatics: Automatic weapons are very difficult to legally obtain in the U.S., and are hideously expensive. I know plenty of gun owners. I don't know of a single individual that possesses a fully-automatic firearm.

Legally owning a fully automatic weapon requires a special permit IIRC. However, many of the older semi-automatic weapons can be retrofit to become fully automatic...However, the ATF has cracked down on sale of these retrofit kits.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

One needs a Class III permit in the USA for such things as fully automatic firearms (one pull on trigger and more than one bullet comes out the business end), short barrelled rifles/shotguns, suppressors and other items. In those States where it is allowed the procedure is tedious, cumbersome and time-consuming but anyone fulfilling the legal requirements can get one - even without training of any type.
Retrofit kits have always been illegal. There are trigger groups registered as Class-III which can be dropped into firearms, but these existed prior to the enactment of the 1986 ban.
No (legal) civilian full-auto firearms have entered the legal market since that date; whatever wasn't registered at that time is no longer legal. There are a few special exceptions.

I'd wear a CO detector around my neck while it's operating!
