Another warrior gone.

Rather than hijack Alex's thread, I thought to write my own. My Father, born 6/6/1927, passed this last Tuesday. He was a veteran of WWII and served with Carlson's Raiders on Makin and Guadalcanal. While he was one of the meanest, nastiest persons I ever met, he mellowed later in life and we became fast friends. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear that, Charlie. My dad died in 2006, born in '25 and dodged first bombs in the Blitz and then U-boats in the Atlantic convoys as a merchant marine. Those old fellows were tough, and they saw things not only worse than we have, but worse than we can imagine. I once asked my father why he never saw his old merchant navy buddies and he said "because most of them died, and the survivors don't like to dwell on that."

Yep, he never would say much about the war. I know he was butt stroke, bayoneted, shot, blown up and left for dead when his unit got pushed back. They found him, dropped him into the sea while transferring him to the hospital ship and took him to Balboa for a year. He didn't remember his own Mama for quite a while due to amnesia from fragments to the head. They didn't come much tougher than that old Gunny.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, Charlie.

That generation is going fast. My own Dad isn't far behind, I'm afraid.

Charlie - I'm really sorry to hear about your loss.

I was on Guadalcanal for a couple of years. It was during the 50th Anniversary of the battle and I got to meet several vets - along with many islanders that worked with the Raiders. Nothing but respect after seeing what they faced.

I'm glad to hear that you guys patched it up and had a good relationship. That's the way it should be.

God bless you and your family.
