Atlas Shrugged fifty two years on.

Ayn Rand's classic libertarian manifesto resonates perhaps more than ever before within American life. In the current economic environment it bears a re-reading. Stephen Moore of the WSJ makes the case quite well. 'Atlas Shrugged': From Fiction to Fact in 52 Years - WSJ.com

(I'm thinking of you, Rags...if you're out there!)

Well, you piqued my interest in Ayn Rand. I tried to find Atlas Shrugged for my Kindle, but all they had was Anthem, so I got that.

"The Fountainhead"? Seriously? Man, that book was a tad overbearing don't you think? Howard was a little too in love with his work if you ask me. He should have gone sailing or something.

I have a feeling that hanging out with Ayn at a cocktail party would have been a serious buzz kill. She's the John Malkovich of literature.

I believe I made my comments on Atlas Shrugging in the Dem's vs Rep's thread.
Stephen Moore, if you ask me, is a little late on the idea.

I bet your local library has Atlas Shrugged in dead tree material form . Anthem and Fountainhead are ok, but Atlas Shrugged is by far Rand's greatest work, IMHO. I first read it as a very young man, it struck a chord and, I'm certain, had quite a bit of influence on me. A few years ago I went out, bought a copy in hardcover, and re-read it.

Atlas Shrugged follows only the Bible in being cited for having had the most influence on it's reader's thinking.

Yes, and it should be required reading in school. "Liberals" would whine, so make, oh, I don't know, Karl Marx' The Communist Manifesto required reading, to balance things out . Grade students on what they learned from each. (Not what they believe--that would be Thought Police stuff--but on what they learned.) All of this would, of course, require that schools actually ensure kids can read, first...
