What happene to the MACK????

I remember, in the early 70's coming to the US with my parents and my brother..It was allways a big excitment..we used to stay in NY city..

I remember the toy stores, the streets..etc..we loved it..used to come almost every year.

I also remember, the big cadillacs, and the fish fin cars....the Lewis Armstrong hair cuts.Mc Donalds was an excitment too...and...the mighty MACK TRUCKS!!!

They would blow the horns on command...PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP, on the high way to Boston..( 95?? 91??) that was sooo cool...there we were fists up off the window..no seat belts, no airbags, and steel dashboards...eheheh

My love for Mack trucks was such that I wanted to be a truck driver in the US at the wheel of a truck..imagine that..a european truck driver..

The sheer size of them, compared to our ridiculous small trucks was gigantic..add to that the movie Convoy, with Ali McGraw and Kris Kristofferson, my favorite movie then, we used to come from school and watch that movie over and over on our old Sony Beta9 tape palyer....I knew the song inside out and the lines to the movie..

So now...almost 40 years after...I am in wyoming, trucks everywhere..but...no MACK...all I see is Peterbuilt and Volvo's..

What happen to the mighty MACK??? did they close down?? why?

can someone tell me?

Thanks

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Just don't see so many on the road anymore. Not sure exactly why.

As a teenager I visited the UK with my family (mid 70's) and was amazed by the different kinds of vehicles used across the pond. I have been back several times and each time the cars look more and more like the ones back in the US (minus the SUVs for the most part).
Thank the global economy Alex. I see far more Isuzu trucks then Macks these days too.

NYC is still exciting now and then. A few weeks ago someone used an Airbus 320 jet as a marine vessel in the Hudson River. The rescue vessels looked like they were herding a disoriented whale - I saw it first hand from the riverside. This spectacle made me want to join the NY FD or Coast Guard. A few people got wet and an Airbus 320 was taken out of the fleet.

What I noticed about those whimpy ass trucks in Europe is, none went any faster than say 100kph, and came to almost a grinding halt at the slightest whiff of a hill. Governed speed? and 38hp engines maybe? My dad's truck could do 90mph (almost 150kph) empty, maybe more.
