She's a hard land....

Over 300 dead, hundreds of thousands of hectares burnt out, incalculable loss of livestock and native animals. People simply perished in their cars as they tried to flee the inevitable. What chance do koalas and yes even wombats have when a fire moves so quickly that it can outrun the fastest horse ? The worst fires in Oz since they started keeping records.

Entire towns have simply ceased to exist.

Meanwhile in far north Queensland the place is six feet under water , whole townships evacuated and more rain to come.

Temperatures in Tasmania are the highest ever recorded.

The other day, my mother, who lives in the mountains west of Sydney told me it was 110 in the shade outside her kitchen.

and they reckon that up to half the fires were deliberately lit......tell me this, What kind of a moron deliberately starts a bushfire ?

One fella who was arrested turned out to be a volunteer fire fighter. He started the fire then reported to his own squad so that he could go out and fight it. How's that for a dark and twisted mind ?

It's a hard land but the people will return, they'll rebuild and they'll carry on cos despite our somewhat laconic nature this is our home and we love her. She'll turn round and bite you on the bum if you're not careful but after all is said and done, we wouldn't trade 'er for quids.

(quid....Oz slang for a pound which was our original currency)

TDW,

That's some rough stuff. We've been watching and worrying from afar. Our thoughts are with you, especially those that have lost their livelihood, lives, or loved ones.

It's a real blow to learn that arson was involved. But your countrymen are a tough lot. I've no doubt you'll bounce back.

We'll be hoping for rain where you need it, and a bit less where you don't.

And keep the boat ready for a quick exit, just in case, eh?

The worst of the fires are in Victoria....eight hours south of here by road and the floods are two days drive north. I'm feeling relatively safe and secure...

Hartley...who hasn't been here for awhile is in Melbourne though I'm not sure exactly where he is.

Simon was last heard of at anchor in Jervis Bay and was, I believe heading for Batemans Bay. Neither are threatened at the moment.

ps - error in original post.....death toll is expected to exceed 300, it has not reached that many yas yet.

That's good TD. Hartley has been missing since the beginning of December, does anyone know what happen to him?

Thanks for the reports Fuzzy. We've been watching on TV here and seeing how horrible it is but were uncertain exactly what areas were being affected. 300 lives in fire is amazing in this day and age. What a tragedy.
Best to all our "mates" down under.

Thanks to the magic of Google Earth I can see that the state of Victoria in Australia is circa 37 degrees South or almost exactly the same latitude as our mutual friend Alex is in Portugal in the Northern Hemisphere or that of Chesapeake Bay in the States. Hell, it's only 6 degrees closer to the equator than Toronto!

And you've had days of 45 C weather?

That is truly astounding.
