Not a mention of anyone trying to help. Could the tail have been grabbed? Could the Heimlich maneuver worked? I wonder if it was alive, and wiggling forward?.....i2f

Not to be too blase about the poor man's suffering and demise: it could have been worse.

Ever watch a blue heron eat a fish. Always head first. The spines on the dorsal fin won't let go down any other way. Unfortunately, the spines won't let come back up either.
