Derelict vessels

Check this article out about the effect the state of our economy is having on older boats. I'm doing my part, on my final push of restoring a 66 Columbia Contender.

Here's a good article with some interesting videos on this topic. According to this it hasn't spiked yet. Some of the boats these people abandon break my heart. You'd think you could give them away on craig's list or something.

I think some of those boats may be hurricane damaged boats that have stuck around.

The downturn in the economy has something to do with it, but I blame some of them on rising insurance costs, and some states/cities passing laws restricting anchoring etc, many boats and people that the laws were designed to oust, were liveaboards because it was inexpensive and couldn't afford to follow the laws and properly dispose of the boats.

Think a better direction for the cities to go would have been to pass a 'visual' inspection requirement, same as nearly all cities have for residential areas. Would have been better all around, cities and states wouldn't be faced with so many abandoned boats, and frankly, I can see a greater homeless issue arising from it.

Ken.

If they weren't current on their slip fees, I'd swear that almost half the boats at most marinas were abandoned based on their condition. I like to look at registration numbers for the year; I've seen several while looking to buy a boat this season that were years past due.

In Texas I don't think they go off what's on the hull anymore. My boat looks out of date but she is up to date.

Hmm, so just not the boats at my marina then. Talking to the girls in the office they told me of a boat where the marina fee's are still paid on time but they have not seen it leave it's berth in the last 6 yrs!!!

We should start a picture thread of unloved boats in Marinas.
I could easily get a half dozen examples from my Marina alone. Just by walkin along one arm.
