I would have told the bank they made a mistake and not stolen the money.

Easy.

Perhaps just looking a bit more wistfully at the Nauticat 39 across the Sound from me though

I was never lucky enough to be on that end of the equation....

BUT,

I once transferred 40K across the country into my daughters account to pay for law school. My name is VERY rare, but yet there is at least another one of me.....and it turns out he lives near my daughter!

So, the money never showed up in my daughters account. I finally called the brokerage company and they said they HAD put the money into my account (for my daughter)....well, you guessed it, they put it into this other dudes account.....40K.

His answer to your question is this - he certainly did not complain. In fact, when I asked the brokerage for the money back they did some checking and told me "we have a problem - he spent it". I told them that was not MY problem (I had sent the correct form and SS#, etc. into them)......

I did get it back. And, the guy is related to me.......although we are not close and have never met.

I would spend the interest on the principle and return the principle when the error was discoverd.

I'm constantly correcting checkout people who give me too much back in change, doesn't matter if it's 1 dollar or a 100 ( which happened in a Target store over a 110.00 coffee maker ) So to answer the question, I would've told the bank right away, doing the right thing will feel better and last longer than the 6.1 mil of stolen money

I think it's a matter of degree- would love to think I would be honest and give it back, but if it was a small enough sum that I could slide under the radar, I'm not so sure. I would never have the nerve to try it with $2.3 million though, so it's more a matter of self-preservation than honesty that would prevent me.

The arm of the "law" is too long and I'm far too naive to have a good spot to hide. I'd reluctantly call attention to the error. Wouldn't it be nice if there was some kind of "honesty" reward for this kind of snaffu... say 10% LOL

If I thought I could get away with it ? Absolutely.

I like the idea of using the money while you had it and keeping the profit.

But as I said to my local deli owner when he undercharged me ten bucks a couple of weeks ago...."Ralph, if I was going to rip you off it would not be for ten bucks".
