Only in America

Only in America:

Bomb parts smuggled into 10 federal buildings during test - CNN.com

We spend what must be billions on security for a level IV Govt building (only 8 years after 911 and don't even bring up the current wars), and have guards asleep and homemade bomb components sent through and assembled and no one ever stopped. You gotta read that.

Now for the only in America part:

1) The guard that shipped the baby through the xray machine was fired. Only in America can he turn around and sue (and win) because he was not adequately trained on how to use an Xray machine. Never mind he was not paying attention, but if he had only gone to the training, he would have known not to turn off the safety's on an Xray and that you cannot put babies through them.

2) And only in America can someone be asleep at their post - and the union boss come back to say that the failure was inconsistent training. Maybe if he had only gotten more training, he would have known not to fall asleep at the desk or not to use his govt computer to run his porn site.

All this in a level IV Govt building housing lawmakers. You gotta love it. Don'tcha know Bin Laden read that and is laughing his arse off. What a complete embarrasment. You tax dollars at work.

I saw that on the news at lunch, pretty amazing. And just think, our government wants to run health care. They can't get something as serious as protecting there own buildings correct and they want to be responsible for my health.

Unfortunately, DHS is an abysmal failure when it comes to actual real security at things like government buildings, airports, etc. The problem is that the bulk of the policies that were put into effect by DHS were knee-jerk reactions done without any real understanding of the problems involved.

As an example, the fact that you need to show a boarding pass and ID to get on a plane is clearly meant as a security measure. However, the TSA implementation of it does NOTHING to add any level of security as pointed out by Bruce Schneier, among others.

Quote:
You can also use a fake boarding pass to fly on someone else's ticket. The trick is to have two boarding passes: one legitimate, in the name the reservation is under, and another phony one that matches the name on your photo ID. Use the fake boarding pass in your name to get through airport security, and the real ticket in someone else's name to board the plane.

This means that a terrorist on the no-fly list can get on a plane: He buys a ticket in someone else's name, perhaps using a stolen credit card, and uses his own photo ID and a fake ticket to get through airport security. Since the ticket is in an innocent's name, it won't raise a flag on the no-fly list.
I'd also point out that the United States is the only country that I can think of that typically used the Terrorist Threat level to manipulate politics.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

It's kinda like installing an alarm system, barring the windows and adding three dead bolts to each door. It still won't keep a determined criminal out of your house, but it sure does make you live a paranoid life.

But hey, in the words of the late Cobain, "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean there not after you". Right?

What a sham.

Actually, what DHS has done is more like installing an alarm system, barring the windows and adding three dead bolts to each door and then leaving the back door to the house wide open... they're idiots.

I couldn't agree more. My point, however is that it's all folly.

Think "Tom and Jerry" (cat and mouse). Only there are thousands of Jerry's and thousands of mouse holes. Even if Tom got smart (Ha!), Jerry would still find a way in.

IMHO

All of which will only lead our Wizards in Washington to "solve" the problem as they always do:
Pass some more legislation.
Throw some more money at it.
