President Awarded America's Cup
This just in...
Quote:
Immediately following a rousing speech given yesterday by President Obama at the U.S. Naval Academy's Robert Crown sailing center, the Trustees of the Americas Cup Deed of Gift and defending club Team Alinghi announced in a joint press conference their decision to award The Cup to President Obama.
Team Alinghi and Société Nautique de Genève, along with syndicate owner and skipper Ernesto Bertarelli, cited Mr. Obamas conciliatory posture toward international relations and evident deep appreciation of sailing as the basis for their decision to "send The Cup home." They also made passing reference to the inability of any recent U.S. syndicate to contend seriously for The Cup. Mr. Bertarelli, speaking for his teammates, questioned the sportsmanship of continually "beating a man while he's down." Bertarelli added, "Where is the glory in that?"
In his Naval Academy speech, Mr Obama praised the sport of sailing, in particular its contributions toward international comity, all while making repeated reference to "winds of change" and employing various other sailing metaphors.
Obama, a non-sailor himself, graciously accepted The Cup "on behalf of all American sailors," and immediately announced his selection of the United Auto Workers' Employee Yacht Club as Defender of Record.
