Merry Christmas!
A very merry Christmas to all, especially to those serving in the armed services a long, long way from home. It is great debt we owe all of them past and present, brave men and women who have spent this holiday and others fighting for and protecting our freedoms.
Indeed, America’s first Christmas was no different. By the winter of 1776, George Washington’s embattled Continental Army was in dire need of any sort of victory in America’s fight for independence. From his position on the Pennsylvania shore of the Delaware River, he planned a surprise Christmas morning attack of the Hessian forces that were bivouacked in Trenton, on the New Jersey side. So on the bitterly cold Christmas Eve of 1776 a call was put out for all well found and seaworthy craft to aid the American forces in their crossing. The future of a fledgling nation hung in the balance. The call was answered and the rest, as they say, is history.
While Emanuel Leutze’s 1851 painting is widely criticized for being historically inaccurate, I can see little wrong with his depiction, shown below. Complaints that the Stars and Stripes were not adopted as the official flag of the United States until six months after the crossing seem to me to be just nit-picking.
Seriously, thank you all for your sacrifices that make it possible for our family to enjoy the bounty and joy of the season. And to all, a safe and merry Christmas.
