Sustainable Housing

We are looking at doing this at both of my sailing facilities, and up at the mountain.

Building with shipping containers - McCormack's

Sorry the website takes so long, I need to invest in a new server.

Some day I will sell everything, buy a 50 ft sailboat, and turn left at the Columbia River Bar

i have looked at doing something with shipping containers, yes they look attractive from a cost stand point. but they do have problems, like finishing the inside, windows doors and stuff. there is a company in florida that builds houses out of em, they say the cost is similar to stick built, but they do it because they are almost hurricane proof.

now they sell foam sheets that match the waffle pattern of the steel panels, so that makes insulation easier. from what i have read to make them a work shop or something else not very finished they are cheaper, but to finish them nicely is not any cheaper than normal building systems

I like the idea. Could finish the thing myself. Wondering about zoning laws here in Oregon.

They have advantages but if you do not need those then they are not cheaper. Check with local companies building modular houses or trailers. Get a quote from them first and then compare final product to final product.

I like domes:

Monolithic: Monolithic

Geodesic: Timberline Geodesic Domes

Reinforced concrete: Domes from American Ingenuity - Home

They don't burn, don't blow down, don't even have a roof to blow off. Competitive building costs per sq ft and you end up with a large, open space you can divide any way you want to.

The only reason we live in square houses is lumber is straight.
