Name and faceless online.... why?

So many threads are started by people without a name.. there so many many more seem to really not want to be "seen" with no pictures. of them, or even a boat!

Granted I'm really out there and have never had a reason to fear that someone is out to "get me" . And of course I don't post my last name and address but I do post my picture, here, on facebook, other sailing forums, and more places. I'm not suggesting anyone be like be all over the place like me.. but would it not at least be nice to see people use a name?

Personally - I like some modicum of privacy. There's not much anymore - but I control what I can.

Anyway, I have enough fans, groupies, and paparazzi as it is.

(PS - Denise, I have to say I'm really impressed with your general knowledge. I've seen some of your advice in G&M and other places - and you sure seem to know your stuff. You're giving Dog a run for his money.)

But sometimes there are reasons, for example, as a term of probation, some people aren't suppose to have access to the Internet. Best to be anonymous.

Because it enables one to speak relatively openly including of personal things, although there is no control over or knowledge of most of the recipients many of whom one would not choose to do so with.
With a little detective work on the internet one could work with limited knowlege to build up a comprehensive database on an individual, and use that publically in ways that are quite destructive of privacy. There have been a few instances of this being done to mount personal attacks with wider consequences. It requires very little to do so, say boat name and location. Fortunately this is rare and most respect a desire for prudent anonymity while still to some extent being able to relate to the person.

seems a bit paranoid to me Chris.. I've been online..oh what? over 20 yrs now? I didn't say anyone should use their real information. but a name..any name would be nice. One that really gets me steaming is spouses talking about hubby .. as if she has no ID of her own

with IP tracing and other types of tools available, anonymity is kind of a moot point if anyone does put real time information on their computers.
