Cruising World Magazine Policy

Back in '08 I subscribed to Cruising World. After only a couple issues I started getting "renewal" notices -- I just tossed 'em in the trash, I had already decided not to renew the subscription.

This week I get a notice from a collection agency (North Shore Agency) saying I owe Cruising World $24 for a subscription. I gave NSA a call and explained I had paid CW for the subcription with a CC (I had the payment info) and that I had not renewed the magazine. She explained that CW does an "auto renew" and expect payment...if not they send it to collections. She is putting in a denied subscription dispute on my behalf to remedy the situation.

FYI

A lot of mags do that. Part of the reason I don't subscribe to them anymore.

Magazine scams

I just canceled my subscription to Sail because of their renewal notice tactics -- they sent a scary looking envelope to my home with bold letters reading "Service Interruption Notice" and inside requested I renew my subscription at preferred rates (my subscription doesn't even end until the fall). It's a shameful tactic and I ripped up their inserts and mailed them back to the fulfillment house using their envelope with a note to cancel immediately. Dumb tactic and it's mostly ads anyway... I'll do without, thank you.

Negative marketing. Never goes over well. I cancelled my subscribtion to CW a few months ago as well. It used to be a decent rag, but has been pretty boring in the last 8 months.

RAGNAR will become famous soon enough
Yachting World is getting more and more annoying in the way it tries to push the Green agenda.

It would be nice if they'd stop presenting those POVs as uncontested or settled science. (You want to limit industry and the like in the name of pristine X, Y and Z? Say so. Make clear that you think the people whose lives benefit the most from these "evils", those on the lower steps of Marx's ladder, should live less well so that boat owners can enjoy untouched scenery.)

At one point, US customers couldn't sign up for the YW print edition on their web site -- only the electronic edition was available (this was not the case for other markets.) When I wrote to make the point, I was redirected to their US distributor's site, with no explanation as to why they were pushing the electronic edition in this way.

Was it a Green thing? Were they looking to cut costs? Both?

No answer.

Still a great magazine, though.
