Cuba

H.R.4645 dated June 20, 2010 - A bill to remove obstacles to legal sales of US agricultural commodities to Cuba and to END TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS ON ALL AMERICANS TO CUBA.
Votes: Yea=25 Nay=20 on 6/30/2010
Is there any interest in sailing from Key West to Cuba in the near future?

Let's see what the Senate does and whether the President signs it into law.

House Resolution is only about 1/4 of "a law". Then it needs a Senate Bill, and then a joint Resolution combining or revising the two, then a presidential signature or veto, and if it is veto'd it can come back for a second pass if it was popular enough.

MANY house resolutions are in fact proposed only to make the voters think their reps are going to do something, and the reps often know the proposal will die without getting any further.

As an old guy, I have never understood why - given the number of other crooked/broken/hostile nations we trade with- why the cuba ban?

They foiled our attempts, yet have survived for years.

I guess outside ideology, there is nothing this small nation has that we want bad enough to overlook their faults..

What say you?

[QUOTE=kd3pc;619378] -- why the cuba ban? --

Why? Because politicians are scared they won't get elected without the support of a small but loud group of Cuban immigrants. Said group is not interested in any type of cooperation with the Cuban regime, even if it would benefit the Cuban people. Why is that? Because they want the current Cuban government to collapse so they can leave the USA and go back to Cuba and run things.
That's ok, just don't fall into the trap of thinking it has anything to do with the best interests of the USA.

People,
I moved this to Off Topic as I figured that any thread that is Cuba related is bound to heat up and almost certainly become political.

If anybody watches Royal Pains on tv they just did a couple of shows set in Cuba. I don't know if they really shot there or not, but it made me think I would love to be able to travel there someday.

cuba pictures by cardiacpaul - Photobucket
this was written around 1970 by rosa's sister for a school report.

Rosa's father was taken in the middle of the night by the bearded besterds troops.
For the first year, no one knew if he was dead or alive.
ALL of the families possessions, including their house and thriving business was TAKEN from them at gunpoint, in the middle of the night.
Rosa's mom and sisters had to literally run from their home, to the hills to hide with relatives.
I was told by Rosa's dad many moons ago that "At least Fidel would listen... it was for a photo op, but he would hear you.
Raul? that SOB would just as soon shoot you as look at you."

Oh, yea, while I'm on a rant... don't pull that "oh, look, they've got cell phones and computers now BS"
Yea, you can get "approved" for a gov't issued cell phone.
Cost? oh, about 25.00 per month. Cheap, right? ehhh, the avg. cuban makes about 12.00 per month.
Oh, look, look at all the tourists and resorts!!!
Well, try to "wander" off the premises. Them look over your shoulder. Yea, they are following YOU.
No, don't get me started at all.

Rosa?
She's batshite, certified round the bend, off her feed crazy. Shes bi-polar, takes her meds like skittles, outta be in treatment nuts.
but she's MY nuts, knowhutimean, vern?
