It's not a "practice," it's human nature. It's part and parcel of the "stranger" reflex. It's built in to our brains by evolution.

When I first heard of it, I, too, thought it the most ridiculous thing I'd heard at the time.

Yeah, those are the locker rooms we're talking about.

Don't know. In a rare reversal of good taste and common sense: Perhaps the male sportscasters have chosen not to make such an innately ludicrous demand?

Kind of. Since male sportscasters are allowed in the men's locker rooms, female sportscasters complained that they were being disadvantaged, effectively discriminated against based on their gender, because they weren't. Facing the prospect of gender discrimination lawsuites, and rather than say "Okay, no more locker room interviews," the various sports leagues decided to allow women sportscasters in the men's locker rooms.

Of course: Now that the women have the access they demanded, the men, in their own element, mind you, are expected to alter their behaviour to accommodate the women.

Neat how that worked, isn't it?

Same thing with certain "men's clubs." Women are demanding admittance because, they claim, and perhaps rightfully so, that business is conducted and business contacts made from which they're excluded. Of course: Once they gain admittance, they're no longer "men's clubs" and they'll of course be obliged to change their ways to accomodate the women.

I bet that if a male sportscaster raised hell about it, he'd either get the access or the women (if they were smart) would ban locker room interviews entirely.

As I've written on this thread already, the term "human nature" is dubious. Our behavior is largely a function of volitional choices, not innate conduct (see the examples I put up.) There are also no reflexes or instincts in functioning human beings. None of that is built into our brains. It is a massive error to project mechanisms found in the animal kingdom onto Man. Our form of consciousness evolved very, very differently than any other animal's. There is no parallel of note to our "ways".
