am i becoming a crumudgeon?!?
OK, im pretty laid back, but at the grocery the other day i found myself in the express lane counting the items in the carts held by those in front of me (to see if they were under the '12 or less' rule). It occured to me that i have done this before...maybe as long as i can remember? does that mean i am turning/have turned into a crumudgeon? I mean, what the he// am i gonna do, call them out?!?! become the 'express police'?!?!
do you guys do the 'item count' thing too?

I HATE the despicable "overcounters" in the "_____items or less" lane. Yo, mouthbreather, 14 cans of the same flavour soup is 14 items, not ONE item. I had to snicker at one overcounter in line in front of me a couple of years ago. He's pushing a FULL cart in front of his fanny-pack covered, sweatpant waistband hiding, beer belly, and when he gets to the cashier, she looks at him, she looks at the cart and does the neck weaving head bob, then says, "Oh, hell no. Now, which 12 items do you wish to buy?"

"14 cans of the same flavour soup is 14 items, not ONE item."
Depends on the setup. If oranges are "three for one dollar" the cashier is supposed to ring $1, once, as one "item". And most electronic registers have the options to ring "14" time "79cents" so there's only one ring for your 14 items as well.
Whether "rings" or "items" are the issue (since it takes the same time to ring "14@79" as it does to ring "1@79" is something else entirely.
And the places that offer two-fer sales, but gladly sell you one at half price....Much as I love it, that's just wrong. The purpose of a two-fer or three-fer sale is to move inventory, and "three for a dollar" usually means "or forty cents each".
If those people in front of us could COUNT, they'd be working for the IRS not standing in the supermarket. Be careful what you wish for, do you really want them to be anywhere else, doing anything else?

I was in the express line a while back, 2 items over the limit. Some snotty nosed kid clearly trying to impress his girlfriend counted, out loud, my items as I placed them on the conveyor belt. He got to ten and said something to the effect of "hey man your over the limit".
I looked him up and down for a bit and said, "cool, I'm impressed, you can count. I'm surprised because quite frankly you don't look that bright"
I felt kinda bad, because his girlfriend looked like she wanted to curl up and die.
So if that was you I apologize.
John
edit: I just realized I called the kid a snotty nosed kid, did I cross over the line into becoming a crumudgeon?

The other day I was driving and noticed after awhile that I left my turn signal on. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Am I becoming one of them?!?
Next thing you know, I'll be a Left Lane Cruiser, happily blocking those young whippersnappers who have someplace to go.
Regards,
Brad
