Question 5.1 Surround Sound?

I just purchase a Home Theater System and having no luck getting surround sound when watching TV, works with a DVD from the HTS. A little info...

Samsung DLP TV
Samsung Home Theater System HT-C550 with DD 5.1
Comcast DVR with HD Box

The set up:
  • Cable from wall to box
  • HDMI Cable from box to TV
  • Digital Optical Cable from Box to HTS
  • Component Video (Pr, Pb, Y) & Audio cable from HTS to TV
Went to Samsung website, nothing, went to their chat room, nothing. My only other guess is that the cable box isn't working properly or isn't delivering 5.1 surround sound?

Thoughts, suggestions?

Have you told your HTS what is the source of everything is?

I do not think you need / want the audio cable from HTS to TV. Or are you using the TV speakers as the front speakers?

You should run everything through the HTS via HDMI. Cable to HTS, not TV. HDMI from HTS to TV. All speakers from HTS. Turn off the TV speakers.

scottyt is on a distinguished road
Does the HTS have multi inputs, if it does wire each source independant. also check out the setting in the tv, as some tvs can "fake" a surround source, mine can. also some tvs can pass thru some types of encoding, but not others, another reason for seperate feeds.

other things, make sure sense you are sending both a signal from the tv and the box to the surround sound that it is not getting confusied, by confused its trying to see the dvd when running the tv. it might just be switching over the HTS input. another reason for seperate feeds.

also check the optical digital cable, try a second one if you have it, if not try compent cables

I just checked the Samsung HTS manual. The system seems to lack HDMI in. My Onkyo system has 3 HDMI inputs.

Use just the digital optical from the box to the HTS. Use the HTS for sound, turn off the TV speakers.

Thanks guys,
I have the digital optical from the box to the HTS...still nothing? I'm thinking its the cable box? Maybe there was a reason it was so inexpensive?

have you selected an input source for the sound? Page 25 of the manual.

Also do you have selectable surround sound functions?
