Can i feed my Dog fish?

Ok maybe im answering my own question. I have a small dog and i feed him small amounts of tuna fish an imitation crab when eating it. My question is, can i feed my dog cooked fish and crab only if im out sailing away from land and stores to get food when i run out? Does anybody feed there dogs cooked fish and crab only when out at sea? I know and have had a dog die from samonilla from eating raw fish when i was a kid. I love my dog but im poor and food is food if he can eat it. fair winds

Eskimos used to feed there dogs fish ALL the time. Food I get for my dog is part fish of different sorts and types. I get some snacks that have salmon in them..............

Take a look at the "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" (BARF ) diet and the piles of information on raw feeding. Here are a few links:
Raw Feeding FAQ
Raw feeding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BARF Diet - Healthy & Natural Raw Food For Dogs & Cats, Pet Health Care Food & Nutrition Products Supply Online

You should pay special attention to balancing the protein, veg and bone intake as dogs require different percentages of each.

Regarding salmonella, you should read this Preliminary assessment of the risk of Salmonella infection in dogs fed raw chicken diets medical study on salmonella in raw-fed dogs. Generally, dogs are not affected by salmonella but do shed it in their stools, so that's good for them but bad for anyone who has to handle the stool - wash your hands, don't lick your fingers.

Lastly, the benefits of raw-feeding dogs are many... I won't get into them, but as it relates to a boat owner, if you switch away from kibble the dog's stool becomes VERY hard which is much easier to pick up if the dog does its business onboard!

p.s. I wouldn't feed your dog COOKED fish. The cooked bones can cause them to choke but they'll handle raw fish just fine. My dog LOVES canned tuna but doesn't like raw trout. She does love raw beefy bones, chicken backs and venison etc.

In Alaska dogs are regularly fed fish, especially working dogs (ie: sled dogs). The Dog Salmon gets it's name from the fact that in nets you would keep the kings, reds, silvers for the family and use the dogs for the dogs. They are otherwise known as Chum salmon. Most I know, including us, cook it to preserve it so that what is caught in the summer can be used all winter.

We also run out of kibble sometimes and our dogs live it up with some older reds that have become freezer burnt.

Be careful though, if your dog has been on kibble for a long time and you suddenly switch them to all fish, you will have other messes on board. We usually see the end of the kibble coming and do a bit of a blend with rice, then richen it up over time. All kibble one day to all fish and you may end up with liquid yuck coming out both ends all over the boat.

of course you can feed dogfish. (sandsharks) they love squid, but take extra care not to get your fingers too close to their mouths.......

My girlfriend buys her dog dogfood that is made with salmon as one of the first ingredients. I don't even get salmon when I go to her place for dinner.

As long as the fish is BONELESS.

Dogs wolf down food, bones can kill them. Fish, furniture, phone books, offal...dogs will eat most anything and most anything will do for the short term. Not so long ago, family dogs got table scraps and butcher scraps and commercial pet chows and dog foods just weren't heard of.
