Sickening, on several levels.

Man Severely Beat 7-Year-Old Girl Who Refused To Give Up Her Bicycle, Say Police

First off, the act itself is beyond my ability to describe.

Second, unless they were other seven-year old kids, the first thing that grabbed my attention in this article was the phrase "Witnesses say".

Witnesses? Someone watched this happen?

I agree it's sickening behavior, but there's also a bit more to the story than the "sensational" headline and article on HuffPo. Police say man beat girl, tried to steal bike: AP Alaska | Alaska news at adn.com

Whatever the man's mental and/or physical condition doesn't in any way excuse his actions, but it's always best to get as much of the whole story, if possible.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but having read more of the story (including your link, also), it actually only gets more sickening to me...and more disheartening.

Has the human race fallen so low?

Forgot this link, which has other info, not in the previous: The Associated Press: Man charged with beating child over bike

That's why I mentioned his condition. Again, even if he was irrational at the time of the incident, it's no excuse. But it does put it in better perspective.

His condition at the time is perhaps slightly exculpatory.

The fact that there were witnesses however, is the part that really sticks in my craw.

I've become pretty accustomed to the evil that men do, and while attack in and of itself was saddening and sickening, it was the evident apathy of bystanders that is the part that really gets to me.

I would expect a 7 year old girl to be in danger if she was wandering a dark alley late at night. Surrounded by people, in the middle of the day? I would have thought she'd have at least one defender in the crowd.

Oh well. Live and learn, I suppose.

Totally agree with people just standing by, and letting this happen. I would hope, whoever they were, weren't physically capable of interfering. It is a sad commentary.

Guys, there were several witnesses to the assault...one even took several photos. One of the photos shows the 6-8 witnesses who intervened and stopped the attack. As soon as the assailant struck the little girl several people ran to her aid.

While society certainly sucks in many ways there are still some folks who will step in when needed.

Thanks for that Dale, I was having a hard time believing that a bunch of Alaskans stood around and did nothing while a little girl was beaten up.

Incredible. If this happened to my kid I would ensure this guy would be wearing casts on his other arm as well as his f'ing legs. This is so messed up. Hell even if he was either high on drugs or retarded he would learn his lesson.

The only consolation I can get from this - and it's small consolation indeed - is knowing what fun he's having in jail tonight.

And yes, I'm just going to pretend that they have this waste of life in general population, and not isolated in protective custody.
