Creative Lobstermen Turning to Charters

As the industry struggles, some CT lobstermen have turned to 'Lobster Charters'

It turns out that Escape is indeed a commercial lobster boat, but she is a charter boat, as well. The smartly dressed people I saw aboard were customers, along for the ride. The fading lobster industry on Long Island Sound has led some creative fishermen to seek harvest from other sources of income.

Thanks Jerry!

I guess it has been going on in Maine & NH for quite a few years, but in Long Island Sound, it's still a relatively new concept.

Been happening here in Nova Scotia for over 40 years, our fishermen tend to do the "tourist thing" in the closed part of the season, especially since the failure of the inshore fishery.

Matt,

A timely article. I just returned last week from Newport and Block Is. My usual stops coming home are the Connecticut River and Port Jeff. I noticed what seemed to be a huge drop in the number of Pots that I usually see on the sound. ( season? ) There was one guy who painted his buoys to look like penguins...they always seemed to be strung out right on my rhumb line. from Saybrook to Port Jeff... Those familiar Buoys were absent this trip.

To pass the time, we made stories up about " The penguin guy" as we called him.
One story had him with two wives..one in each port..

funny, while i was headed out the inlet while working a charter i saw a lobster boat that said blah blahs lobster charter here in NJ at Manasquan Inlet. me and the crew thought it was something like a sick fantasy labor charter where some shady capt could coerse people into paying to come work for a day.. guess we were right..

not that it is a bad idea, just that i wouldnt expect anybody to set foot on that particular vessel given its look of lacking seaworthiness.
