Totally agree, career NCO's are the grease that keep the military operating - they are the holders of the "corporate memory". The military could do without several levels of officer as long as they have a good core of NCO's to make things happen.
Clint Eastwood dramatized this very well, if a little predictably, in "Heartbreak Ridge".
