Who is going to give you permission to take apart the boat? How are you going to move the keel once separated? Do you become financially responsible once you start salvage operations? Even if you get the boat off the beach would a marina take the boat knowing the history of the owner? Most of the time when one jumps into a train wreck one gets squashed. Good luck, and I do feel for the owners. I hope it works out for the best for all concerned.

Hopefully the owner, and obviously I'm not going to touch his boat without meeting him first and getting permission.

The keel, once separated, might be able to be lifted in a front end loader into a dump truck. Even if the city winds up removing the keel, at least the owner has the boat still. A keel might be able to be replaced easier than an entire boat.

I don't know if a marina would take the boat, I don't have these answers. As for salvage, I want no part of that. Any help I offer is free of charge and not intended for any personal gain whatsoever.

I realize all of the problems with trying to help this guy out, but at the very least maybe I (and others maybe?) could be extra hands.

I think you will find that since he is a ward of the state, and that the boat is above the high water line, the city of Norfolk "owns" the boat at the moment. And unless you plan on bringing an attorney with you in the am Friday, you may find yourself at odds with the LLEO and VDEQ. Showing up Saturday will be too late to deal with the city folks.

Paper this morning shows bids are being solicited for the boat's removal and subsequent bill to the boat owner. Getting Mr. Callabrese' permission may be difficult as he is currently in the mental health system of the COV. He likely has NO legal standing and will not until early next week (72 hr mandatory in VA), assuming he is adjudicated competent and makes bail and released or transferred to jail.

Any way have a safe trip, the weather is supposed to be more of the same through Sunday - rain, rain and some rain, which will make beach work tough. You do have permits to dig the beach and such??

All irrelevant because of:

This is certainly one of those situations.

Edit: to clarify further-this guy is on one of those downward spirals that pulls in and sinks those with good intentions. I've witnessed enough to be able to identify that kind of downward spiral from half a country away.

I thought he was released from the mental health unit. Can you provide a current link to his status?

As for the rest, maybe the city would object to help offered to the man, I don't know. Am I really the only one willing to at least try to help out a fellow sailor? Am I really so naive for thinking I could just show up and help out somehow/someway?

What happens if it sinks in 30ft of water after rescuing it from a perfectly safe beach??

I'll say a prayer and donate an extra $50 to the Salvation Army this year.

Naive to help this particular sailor? Yes.

Just because someone owns a boat like yours, doesn't immediately make them deserving of special consideration and special assistance.

Ever since his beaching, this guy has run around town drunk, belligerent, defecated in a law enforcement vehicle, arrested multiple times. Don't try to hand me the excuse that I'd be upset too if my home was thrown up on the beach. People lose their homes and posessions all the time, and don't go tear up their town. They seek help, and/or work hard, they don't waste their time drowning their remorse in a bottle when they should be on the beach digging or hiring a truck.

This guy is a "professional victim", who feels that life is just out to get him, and that none of his bad luck is of his own making.

Google Dunning-Kruger Effect to understand how this guy got to where he is today.
