Hollywood should be torched
Help me understand how this sh*t can go on.
The Row $39, 000 Backpacks Sell Out | Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen’s Luxury Alligator Knapsacks Prove Popular
Posted on: Oct 4
When I heard that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen would sell a $39, 000 alligator backpack as part of their new The Row accessories line, I scoffed. I doubted that anyone would spend such a significant amount of money on a backpack. But it seems that my doubt was misplaced, as the backpack is the first from the range to sell out.
Fashion retailers aren't entirely surprised by the interest in the luxury backpack. Barneys' fashion director Amanda Brooks said that "If you were ever going to spend $39, 000 on a bag, that's the bag you should buy." I guess I just underestimated the number of people who intended to spend $39, 000 on a bag!
As if the price wasn't already prohibitive, the popularity of the backpack style has also taken me aback. Sure it's made of alligator, so immediately covetable. But at the end of the day, it's a backpack. While it's practical, or as practical as any bag with a five-figure bottom line can be, the style still reminds us of our early school days. I suppose the popularity of The Row's backpack might elevate the style to a new luxury status, but I'm still not convinced.
There's no denying the numbers though. I had some serious doubts, but it seems Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen know exactly what they're doing.

A couple of ideas related to this phenomenon - obviously there is a problem with an economic system and / or tax regime that provides people with enough money to indulge in this kind of sickening decadence. It is also a comment on the intelligence level of the huge numbers of people who read about and / or care about these 15 minute wonders like the Olson's, Hilton, Kardashian's etc. which provides them with these enormous levels of $$.
It ain't Hollywood's fault, they just know how to make huge piles of $$ off the brainless, desperate suckers who buy their crap for those sort of grotesque prices.
And by the way, it is nothing new - trophy wives have been paying tens of $$thousands for labelled handbags for a long time. I think they learned it from the Arab princes. Bugatti Veyrons and $million Hemi Cudas are pretty much the same thing, although they have a bit of investment value in many cases. It's basically Rich white people with too much time on their hands.

Sorry JB,
it is not just "rich white people" ...many of the exotic cars go to the other races in just as vast numbers, as do the watches, the bags, the "Sean Jean" line, birthday parties, and Sweet 16 updos.
Capitalism...I wish I could come up with the next pet rock, or knapsack to make that kind of $$
BTW, the $1M cuda's have all but dropped to the cellar, last one went for under $600K....

I know, it's just an expression I got from Law & Order that I really liked. Around here the really sick stuff like that is mainly done by immigrant Chinese kids - I call them Poodles because they are overbred, pampered, spoiled, useless and completely unable to fend for themselves. (Before any dog lovers snarl at me, I actually like standard poodles a lot.)
Boy, only $600K for a Hemi Cuda - a veritable bargain.
As to the pet rock syndrome, W.C. Fields was right - "You can't cheat an honest man so never give a sucker an even break or smarten up a chump"

Just what is the problem? That they make too much, or they get to keep too much? Or both?

If they are spending most of an average family's yearly income on a BACKPACK, everything about it is a problem. They make too much, they get to keep too much, they lack a functioning mentality, they provide an opportunity for someone to cater to that kind of nauseating decadence, they make reasoning people sick to their stomachs, they EXIST, they provide an opportunity for right wingers to defend their mindless behaviour, they.... You get the idea.

I'm neither defending, nor, condemning, their behavior. I didn't ask about what use they make of their money. I only asked if they have too much and/or are taxed too little, then at what point will you cap their wealth, by statute or through the tax code, so they can't engage in such behavior? Because that's the only remedy.

Let me make sure I understand things here.
Because some people have the money, that they have obtained legally, to spend on what is considered decadent purchases, the economic system and/or tax system are not working properly.
Is that a correct assessment of your position SJB? As that is how I understand your statement: "... obviously there is a problem with an economic system and / or tax regime that provides people with enough money to indulge in this kind of sickening decadence.".

Yes, I find that decadent, but sometimes that creates jobs for regular people.
Here, where the unemployment is also a big problem some guys decided to open a business based on luxury collars and stuff for pets and I mean really luxury, the kind made with gold and diamonds.....and it was a big hit.
One of the television channels interviewed them and showed some of the "jewelries". They sell mostly for Asia and united States and also for some European countries. They didn't sell almost nothing here, well I would have said that the economic situation of the country could be a factor if Porto (the biggest city on the North) was not the world's city with more Ferrari per capita
I guess that the rich guys here just prefer fast cars
Regards
Paulo
