The biggest surfed wave: movie

I was surprised when I saw this movie some days ago, not only for the size of the wave but mainly to see where an Hawaiian went to look for the biggest world waves: Just in the small town I used to have the boat, Nazaré, Portugal.

If you are not affraid of waves, that's a nice town to visit when cruising by these parts. I have said to you guys that there are big waves along the Portuguese shore

That's a 90ft wave:

This is "my" beach

Mick Fanning e Taylor Knox passeiam de tow in nas morras de Peniche on Vimeo

I lived here for 20 years and I have there a beach house. The world surf tour in Portugal is run in Peniche, the near by town and the beaches used is this one and Super tubos, more nearer Peniche.

Google eath Baleal to see the place.

I only have done surf in a kayak but most of all I still do the beach traditional sport that is almost extinct, we call it "carreirinhos" and that's about surfing waves but without a board, only with the body (the body is the surf board).

Regards

Paulo

I didn't know that surf got that big in the Atlantic. I've seen two other films on people surfing waves that gigantic - one in Hawaii where the guy set the record a few years ago and one REALLY strange one something like 100 miles southwest of L.A. where a seamount causes huge surf - in the middle of the ocean! From what I gather it is the top of what should be the southernmost of the channel islands - it just didn't quite make it. It is very strange to see people surfing these huge waves with no land anywhere in sight. Sure is no place to stumble into sailing at night!
