FADO (Fate)

Today the song of my hometown was selected to be part of the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity".

You don't know what is that? Neither did I before I heard in the news that "Fado" is now part of it.

It turns out that is a list of cultural representative immaterial cultural benchmarks on its most diverse varieties and from the most diverse earth cultures.

After I found out I had a good time having a look at the ones that were a already selected. Look at the movies, lots of interesting stuff:

UNESCO Culture Sector - Intangible Heritage - 2003 Convention :

Regarding the Fado, let me share that with you, that's a kind of Portuguese Blues, or maybe the Blues are a kind of American Fado, since the Fado is older

The one that was the biggest Portuguese diva, a legend, Amália Rodrigues singing "Canção do Mar" (Sea Song):

A very popular Fadista, Carlos do Carmo singing "Canoas do Tejo" (My first boat was a 80 year's old Canoa do Tejo):

And for last Mariza, one of the best from the new generation singing "Barco Negro" (black boat):

Songs about sea and and boats are one of the most popular "Fado" thematic, after all sea and boats play an important part on Lisboa story.

From my limited exposure to Fado music it should be on the list. As the world becomes more interconnected we run the risk of a homogenization of music and media.

Thanks, I love Fado but I am also a big fan of cultural diversity and I like a lot of different musical expressions. What would be the world without diversity? a Boring place

Regards

Paulo

If some of the moderators look at this, please alter the name of the thread. I screw up. "Fado" means not Faith but Fate: It should be FADO (Fate)

Sorted for you Paulo.

I cannot remember whether I first heard Fado through recommendation on SailNet or whether it was when I visited Lisbon a few years back. Hauntingly beautiful.
