National Geographic Photo Contest

National Geographic is currently holding its annual photo contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30. For the past nine weeks, the society has been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to vote for them as well.

National Geographic was kind enough to let me choose among its entries from 2011 for display here on In Focus. Gathered below are 45 images from the three categories of People, Places, and Nature, with captions written by the individual photographers.

Good selection. Artistically, it's a great photo. The humans look more like a flock of birds than the birds (cormorants?) do. Can't you imagine that the flock of humans are rushing into the waves, while the bird spectators watch? Some of them of course are bored. Bunch of dumb humans flocking mindlessly and identically into the water.

Thanks for that!!!

My favorites;

To paraphrase the caption, he won the right to his harem, no kidding!! Those eyes have a look that says, "You and me can get along just fine, but understand what's mine is mine, got it!!

Notice the battle scars? He didn't get that big by being the shy one on the playground.

Again with the eyes...

Thanks again for posting that, I feel for the judges, hard to pick.
