Sailing around the world using post 911 GI BILL

I am currently using my gi bill to attend school in marathon and for vets post 9/11 era we get a living stipend to attend school. As of oct 2011 you can go to college exclusively online and get a living allowance of 670 USD per month to attend school for up to 48 months. if i could figure out a way to stay connected to the internet i could spend 4 years cruising the world and get a paycheck everymonth just as long as i keep my grades up. does this sound too good to be true? has anyone done this?

$670 per month is pretty tight...I could make it work personally, until something big on the boat broke...

good point. well im gonna keep cranking the living allowance in marathon, fl which is 2100 per month and put all but 500 into savings for this trip. i still havent found any internet provider yet that can give me world wide remote sat internet for less than 6 dollars a mb ouch! so that would eat into the 670.. with a long term sailing plan like that i could play the cards of world economy for yearly food budgets. im also trying to get some money from a book im publishing...(far shot i know) perhaps i could get some telecommucation sponsors but then i have to weight the cost of some company dictating the course and safety of the vessel. plus. i can can always stop and work for a season.

Great idea!

That is a great idea! My husband retires in Three years and we where going to split his between our kids , but my daughter wants to sail with us. Wonder if she could use it that way also. Have you found any cheap online resources yet?

Online tuition should be fully covered under the post 911 unless for somereason the online school you chose is way outside the other schools in price. I sailed down to the florida keys to go to school. I get tuition paid plus 2100 per month living allowance. here is the big catch i found out today, gi bill will not pay out of state fees whatsover. so now im stuck with paying 3500 per semester out of pocket in addition to what the gi bill is paying until i have been living in florida for more than a year. So goodbye florida! im thinking sail to puerto rico for the next semester studies. however when you travel overseas the GI Bill post 911 living allowance is capped at 1300 per month. online is capped at 600 per month, wich is not enough to cruise safely.

Check out Columbia Southern University. It is a completely online University and many of the students are military. And very inexpensive.
