4 days in America, where would you go?

So imagine you could spend 4 days somewhere in North America in the spring. Where would you go, and why?

It might be a bit chilly but I would consider Newfoundland.

I was there for a month in June '97. It was spectacular. The Avalon peninsula with it's fog-enshrouded cliffs dotted with puffin holes (and the puffins that made them); Cape St Mary's - just spectacular! The Northern Peninsula with the Fjords and hanging valleys of Gross Morne, the Viking encampment at Lans aux Meadows and the icebergs lined up along the horizon in iceberg alley off St Anthony's. Herds of caribou, tones of moose, pods of whales (humpbacks, minkes, pilot). Not to mention the pubs on George Street in St John's.
The people have to be the friendliest I've ever met!
Come to think of it: four days? Forget it! Go to Vegas!

I'd drive down the coast towards California for three days and then go inland to I-5 for a one day blast home.

Why - because I love Oregon & California, especially the north coast and I can DRIVE it in my choice of nice cars (actually my wife's choice ), not fly there & back.

Pretty much depends on what one wants out of the experience, as well as what you call spring. For myself, I'd be quite happy to be sitting at anchor on the South River in NC.

Early spring, or late spring?

Early spring, New Orleans- for the food and the weather. After a gloomy Canadian winter, nothing perks you up like great jambalaya, a bottle of Jax and a hint of balminess.

Late spring, Washington DC- for the blossoms, museums and monuments. 4 days would just about give you time to properly do the Smithsonian(s)

You might consider a Sailnet destination. Choose a location and see if you can meet up with some fellow Sailnetters for lunch or dinner during your trip. Chesapeake Bay 'netters are very welcoming and love to eat and meet other forum members. Heck, John and I drove down two hours and met one member in an industrial parking lot.

But I love New Orleans and Key West. And the Smithsonian is a treasure that could fill your entire trip. Too many tourists during cherry blossom time but otherwise you have all those free museums and great restaurants.

The desert in Southern Utah, Bryce Canyon, CanyonLands, Moab, maybe a drive over to the Grand Canyon. Or a few days rafting on the Colorado river.

Florida Keys for the nice weather and beaches, specifically Bahia Honda and Key West.

All good suggestions. Let's put it into the context of having won a holiday that has to be finished before the end of May, and consists of travel and accommodations for 3 nights.

4 DAYS - from the little I know about the Smithsonian, 4 WEEKS would be a quick glance, 4 YEARS would be vacation spent there exclusively and 4 LIFETIMES would be needed to do it properly.

Just the Air & Space would take days. I went to the Air & Space at McMinnville (associated in some way with the Smith), spent the whole day there, only saw one of three huge hangars and only drove past all the outside exhibits.

A couple of days at the Smith would be like sitting down to the best banquet you ever saw and only being allowed one mouthful.
