It can be staggering - a while back there was a fairly senior official in the CRA (our IRS) that fell for one of these things - he lost 6 figures IIRC.

Like I said on another thread - there are TWO suckers born every minute.

The scammers play the numbers. Although 99.9% of the population is smart enough to realize the scam, if you send out 1,000 e-mails, you will find the 1 sucker or borderline criminal who will participate in the scam.

Of course, the sucker or borderline criminal has to believe he or she is entitled to make thousands of dollars for making a deposit at the bank and wiring funds (not too difficult to find in our entitlement culture).

Judging by all the mistakes native speakers make, I think that ain't gonna work so well, neither. I don't think there's one English word I haven't seen misspelled.

I saw a preview on either the BBC or Al-Jazeera English about some guys that got even with these scammers - but haven't found the broadcast itself. Has anyone seen it?

Here are some other interesting hits I did find, though:

'Internet's first blood sport' (getting even with Nigerian scammers)

419 Eater - The largest scambaiting community on the planet!

~~|~~ Do these things suck? ~~ Spoof the Nigerian Scam Spamsm fight back ~or~ play with them.

BBC - Crimewatch - How They Caught... The Ghana dating scammers

BBC - Watchdog - Watchdog - Scams

The broadcast I saw the preview to must have been about the 419 Eater site.

I know a guy who got $10 out of a Nigerian scammer. Now, $10 aint much but the satisfaction was better than a cheap lunch! LOL
