I've only been a member for a month or so and only have a few posts, but I've done a ton of scanning and reading through the forums gathering information. I've had a lot of different hobbies and been on quite a few forums. IMHO this is as good as any, pretty active, some sub topics are pretty much dead, but all the main catagories are pretty busy. Any site is going to have mean people, just like anything or anywhere, there are always the nasty ones, but I haven't seen too many nasty arguments.

What gives?
Perhaps more new members are actually reading through the forums before starting the 167th new thread that has already been covered in depth in 166 old threads.

Some topics legitimately need new threads to keep updated with new technology, regulations, etc. But responses to "I've no experience, I want to buy a 50' boat and sail the South Pacific" don't change no matter what decade we're in.

As a new boat owner, I have found this site an exceptionally good resource of knowledgeable and helpful sailors. Almost every response to a thread I started has been helpful or at least entertaining.

I am looking forward to gaining experience enough to give back more. I have practiced a couple of snarky remarks for my own amusement, but mostly try to read and learn.

I even scored a great deal on the sailnet store on a price match. The membership price here is worth it.

When you stop learnin' someone usually pulls the sheets over your face and calls an undertaker.

I noticed that you've dialled it back from days gone by. You should post more - your input is always worthwhile.

(You could bring back your old avatar too. )

+1 Denise. Your posts are definitely some of the most informative I've seen around here. You kind of rock (and so did that avvy...heh-heh).

What gives?
I've always found SN to be a valuable and entertaining forum host. As long as you stay off the PRWG forum (AKA "The Sewer") I've never seen much in the way of rudeness or meanness.

I think experienced sailors can get impatient with the "What kind of boat should I buy for less than $10K to sail around the world?" questions from newbies who haven't done any reading or research.

If you want mean and rude and the PRWG forum isn't enough, try Sailing Anarchy - you REALLY need a thick skin over there.

+1 to that
Additionally, this site provides a great forum to discuss, well, anything boating. At my age (recent college grad), comparatively few people are interested in sailing. The site gives myself and people like me access to a whole bunch of people with similar interests, who will give me the time of day, even if I'm young enough to be their son (or grandson!). Also, it stops me from babbling to my friends about things they don't understand or particularly care about, so I'm sure they appreciate the site as well.
