200-Year-Old Wreck Off Watch Hill, RI

For 2 centuries it rested a mile from shore, shrouded by a treacherous reef from the pleasure boaters and beachgoers who haunt New England’s southern coast.

Now, researchers from the U.S. Navy are hoping to confirm what the men who discovered the wreck believe: that the sunken ship off the coast of Rhode Island is the USS Revenge, commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry and lost on a stormy January day in 1811.

I passed through that area a couple times only and it certainly is a treacherous reef. Can't imagine what it would have been like with kinds of charts and nav instruments they had at that time. No wonder there are lots of wrecks in areas like those.

That sneaky cocky rat bastage should have gone down with his ship.

On the plus side, this discovery has inspired a new drink.

Why was he a sneaky rat bastige? He had a long standing feud with Elliot and was involved in a duel with Heath after the slapping incident. The duel was resolved when Perry refused to fire on Heath and the life long feud with Elliot was never resolved.
