The Harstad 31 Motorsailer

This is one of the more obscure boats out there.

It's obscure for a reason. It is a Clipper Marine 32 with a doghouse added.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere:

I think you nailed the plusses and minuses of the design quite well in your blog, Tom.

Oh, it's a bit more than that. I guess if you have never owned one you might have that skewed a viewpoint.

There were almost more minuses than pluses, but in the end it is a matter of personal taste. We really enjoyed owning ours, but she did not fit our needs.

Re: The Harstad 31 Motorsailer

The Harstad 31 came with a Yanmar 20 HP diesel engine. The Clipper Marine 32 came with a 8hp diesel engine with an optional 12hp available.

The keel weight was 10% heavier, on the Harstad, but a 2200 pound keel was available on the CM32 as an option.

Several other differences were present, most notably the doghouse and larger windows.

Over 500 of the CM32's were made in aft cabin as well as aft sloop with a ketch option available on the aft cabin. A tall rig was also available with a 10% taller main mast. Fewer than one dozen of the Harstad 31's were made.

Wow, thanks for the additional information! Although we sold ours, we always remember her with fond memories. We have many, many, pictures and we remember her as the most comfortable sailboat we owned to sleep on. I'm sure the 4" memory foam mattress in the V berth had something to do with that, but the 7+ foot mattress, along with the 7+ foot headroom also helped.

I still search for information from time to time, hoping the new owner will post things about her. He was an Aussie that had plans to ship her there to sail her and then sell her. Maybe one day...

Re: The Harstad 31 Motorsailer

Her displacment was 8000 pounds compared to the CM32 at 4500 pounds and rated as a light displacment cruiser racer. I chuckle at anyone thinking my sailboat is a racer, but I guess that was one way around racing rules, add a mizzen mast.

I believe not only the headroom to be higher on the Halstead in the main cabin under the doghouse, but forward in the head and v birth, by studying images.

I am collecting images of all boats designed by Crealock. At Clipper Marine.

If you would share some in our gallery, that would be wonderful.

Re: The Harstad 31 Motorsailer

Head room in the V berth was over 7 feet. I can attest to that by having owned one and slept in her on many occasions.

Let me have a look at what I have on my Picasa account, and I'll get back to you. If I don't, please remind me at tom@svfootprints.com

Re: The Harstad 31 Motorsailer

I really want to set foot on a Harstad 31 someday. They look very nice. Maybe I will get lucky, and find one for sale that is still in good condition. They seem to be holding well, if people took care of them. Crealock was a good designer.

I own two CM32's, so I need another sister ship like I need a hole in my head! lol

They are my favorite sailboat.

Your signature line on Obama. You know the Dems and the Repubs are two heads on the same snake. The leader that the Military Industrial Complex and big business wants, is who we will get. Also, very seldom does a one term president, stop with one term. Carter, and a couple others. Johnson, if you don't take into account is half term.

Pretty much count on another 4 years. The Lakota Sioux tribe has claimed Nebraska, Wyoming, North and South Dakota and one other state as theirs, and has seceded from the union. Living in Nebraska, I guess I had better start sending my tax money to the new government. lol
