Dennis Choate Built Sailboats
Does anyone have any information or experience with Dennis Choate designed and built sailboats? I have located a 1978 Choate 41' sloop in Alameda, California. Significant upgrades have been made and a general survey states it is in good condition. Are these good boats, any views on sailing abilities, pluses and minuses? Thanks for any information you can provide
We owned a Kaufman designed Choate built 40 footer for 12 years. She was a 'crusified' IOR 2 tonner from '82 and was really quite a nice boat.
Over those years we continued to 'cruisify' the boat, modifying the galley and adding a fixed pilot berth instead of a pipe. We added a cockpit locker and a foredeck anchor locker too, which required cutting into the deck. We were really impressed with the glass work, it was uniform, coring was dry, finish was quite good, esp on deck. We had a great cockpit with a wheel in a well, good access and seats with backs, not a racing pit. If you're interested I can post pics.
All in all it's probably my favourite boat of the 5 or 6 we've owned over the years. GOOD sailing gear, hydraulics, oversized winches, plenty of genoa track options, and as a flush deck it was a great sailing platform. We owned it in partnership with another couple and between us and our kids we always had plenty of crew.
Feel free to PM with more questions if you like....
Just wondering if it is Wizard out of Portland?
It was...it has been sold and probably renamed.
